Going to be doing a new Siege Army when get home (models are awaiting me!) and this is the colour scheme. Just thought I'd show you how nuts those French were and leave you with this quote:

'Abolish red trousers?! Never! Red trousers are France!'
- Eugene Etienne, the French Minister of War, 1913

French Colonial Troops 1915

French Infantry 1915

Alpine Troops

Cavalry

Look forward to seeing photos of your finished army. :D

To be fair to the French we should admit they did get rid of the Red Trousers by the end of The Great War.

No-one can see your trousers in a trench - seems like they could get away with it :p.

Of course, within an hour they would have been covered in mud like everyone else :).

To be fair, it was only later on that they adopted red trousers. Napoleon didn't use them on his men.

I'm not sure when they changed, but they certainly had them for the Franco-Prussian War of 1870

Just saw this thread sorry Chris...

Yes the French were nuts.  They still had mounted heavy cav with breastplate and all.

Their encounters with the machine gun quickly changed their minds on uniform color.

Yep ... have seen pics of the early French "combat dress" ... very pretty ... :;):  However, they have a certain "period ambience" !   But no heart attack ...yet ... Tas !

When I think of the L4 "No Clowns" rule, I always take the period into account. But pink is just right out as is Lime Green. :;):

that being?

Ah heck, here is my attempt to cover the bases:

No Pink or Lime Green means I will never use those on any figure that will be in my armies.

I always take the period into account means that Red on my Space Marines is a No. Red on my British Colonials works.

"No Clowns" means I will try to paint my troops and vehicles in the colors that would make sense for the kind of warfare and terrain they are in. So my Forest troops will never be in Banana Yellow Power Armor. My Desert troops will not be in Shinny Silver or Neon Purple combat vehicles.

Hope that helps.  :p

Tsk. Pink is ok for Tzeentch, Slaanesh, Dark Eldar, and flesh is, well, more or less pink too. :p
And a desert does not have to be sand coloured if its alien. On the planet Magenta, they have neon purple sand and banana-coloured rocks.  :blues: :p
