Hi all,
just back from Italy, and what do I find? SIX - yes, 6 - pages of posts to read! Gah! Not to mention Incoming!
Anyway - the holiday was a success. We stayed in Treviso, which is close to Venice, and whilst the wife was attending a pathology conference (a Mayo one, Primarch), I dashed off to Venice most days. Sandra would join me in the late afternoon, as the conference was a morning job.
And believe me, if any of you guys ever visit one place, make sure it's Venice. It may be a bit touristy, but it's SPLENDID!  :D  :D  :D
I took 353 photos, bought 6 books (including 2 Corto Maltese comics - yes, that IS his name, and he's a sailor in the 1st world war up to the 1920s, created by a Venetian, Hugo Pratt) and a couple of Rackham Confrontation models, and a mask (more later). We say St. Mark's, and the Doge's palace, and a handful of museums, an opera (Die Zauberflote), lots of pizza, ice creams, ferry rides.

Fun, anyway.
Oh, and Treviso is nice too, with its 13th century walls and some equally old buildings.
Here's some (but not al!) pics. Gondolas, first and foremost, of course!

Next up - the entrance to the Arsenale - the naval shipyard of Venice's glory days. One for you, Tas!   :D

Another lion, the most famous one - St Mark's lion on the column near the Doge's palace. Much better than an Imperial Eagle!

There IS an eagle too, though - mosaic on a very small part of the roof of the Basilica of St. Mark.

Here's the basilica itself.

The island of San Giorgio. the sea looks blue from here, but is really a muddy green.

This is Venice herself, enthorned on lions, on the facade of the Doge's palace.

And a very special mask - an artistic creation which will be auctioned for charity. This particular Medusa mask is a good idea for a Chaos conversion!

And your photographer again, busy taing a shot of his stunt double! this is at the bows of a ferry in the Canal Grande, and I took a photo of myself reflected in the glass of a landing stage. ?:80: Good grief, I am a grim photographer!

LOL, that last shot look's like you were stuck between a kid and his unhappy mother. Maybe your look was caused by tourist-pamphlet-to-head-whacking. :D

Great photos. Definitely a place I would like to go - anytime between the middle of September and the middle of May. You probably timed it perfectly!

Just lucky, TC, the wife had a conferece these days - and it WAS a good time - avoiding carnival and summer tourist rushes, and getting good weather too.
As for the kid + mum - well... yes  :(  - wasn't too bad, though, the kid was actually sensible enough to duck out of the way when I took one shot across the boat.

I know that one. He seems to have achieved somewhat of a "cult" status. Personally I hate Pratt's style of drawing. But that's just me. My little sister OTOH likes him very much but she likes strange things anyway. Like modern art...
