That's funny, after seeing the new stealth suits, I'm more likely to ditch GW for Infinity.

Out of curiosity, what's haqqislam mean in arabic?

I might be able to get a playtest game in sometime this week... if I can find someone who's willing to try a new game.

I would suspect it would truly depend on which particular version of written or spoken Arabic would be in use as the source for the word.

As I understand it Haqq would very loosely translate out something along the lines of "the truth" so Haqqislam would be a bastardized word meaning something along the lines of the Real or True Islam...

Although I'd be willing to bet my next paycheque that in the case of Haqqislam it wouldn't actually be conjugated that way at all.

Very true Heresiarch - in another contest, however, it means that it is damned. At least it's not written correctly; but I'd personally not include the name of any religion in a game at all. I wouldn't be offended by anyone damning Catholics (I am one) (er - a Catholic, not someone damning the religion... :p ), but - say, in Malta, where I live - not everyone would feel that way. In fact I wonder whether people here would feel that way about GW's od Squat world being named Golgotha. Scratch that - I'm certain they'd be offended.
Anyway - hasn't much to do with the game at all. So back on topic, or I'll end up moderating myself for extensive digression.
Has anyone made a Defiler yet - or is it only me who sees that many-legged thingy that way?

I haven't seen any of the minis 'in the flesh' yet, but it looks like the remotes are on 25mm bases.  That implies that they'll be a bit big for defiler conversions.  4-legged knights, OTOH... :D

in another context, however, it means that it is damned

Ahhh.  So ka.  That would be an ... unfortunate translation.  I wonder if anyone's pointed this out to them, yet.

I've actually just pre-ordered a pack each of the two styles of remotes from my local hobby shop.

They look like they'll make nice heavy support robots for my old 25mm Spacelords figs from Hobby Products.

Or for that matter the unfortunate possible conotations of calling the Haqqislam homeworld "Arsch"... thats the one that really made me go.  :wow:  :8:

They probably love a few other GW worlds then, like Gehenna and Armageddon...

Hehe, that's what caught my eye too. German speaking moslems might not be too happy about that.

Anyway, they're going to need some real editing done on the rules. I'm not a native speaker and even I noticed the rules, while perfectly understandable,  are full of funny expressions which might irritate native English speakers. It's pretty obvious the writer is in some cases writing Spanish in English. Just like I am every now and then writing Finnish in English.   :8):

I have to compliment you, Mojarn. If I didn't know better, given the way you write English, I would swear that it was your native tongue.

I checked back in on this game. The quick start rules are out, as are some of the minis. The full rules will be out soon. I got hold of the quick start rules and gave them a read through, and to be honest I am a bit disappointed. The rules seem overly complex in mechanics, without this going into the detail of the game. For example, a mini can perform an action such as move and shoot. His target then reacts and the roll is made. Who-ever wins gets to make the shot and the other model doesnt. If you are shooting then you roll for a target value. If there is a reaction then you roll to beat your opponent. If your opponent is not shooting, but dodging then a different system is used...

It looks interesting in its background, but it just doesnt seem to have that bit extra to make me want to collect and play it. Has anyone else looked at this system? And, what do you think of it?

(This experience also reminded me why I really dont like 'quick starter' rule sets.)

Thanks.

There's a battle report in the current issue of the fictional Reality mag.

Thanks. I had missed that, and have now read it through. A few points...

1. The point made about the secrecy of the Lieutenant is something that struck me too.

2. Scaleability. I am not sure how well this system will take to larger games. It is clearly aimed at squad action engagements - with each mini being activated seperately. With larger games, this could be tiresome. Also, the reaction system leaves me with a few worries. Advanced Space Crusade (ahhh, short pause while CS reflects on one of his top games of all time and his eyes glaze over) had a similar system. This works great when you are likely to get one or two enemy troops watching you, but when you have more infantry, and potentially four or more reactions, it all gets bogged down.

3. Modifiers - everywhere. I dont mind the modifiers but there seem to be a lot to keep track of. Also, the question in the box at the start of turn two was something that I mentioned worried me a little. When do you conduct 'face to face' rolls and when do you roll straight to target values?

I think that this game has the potential to be really interesting. The background is new, and the concept of 'hacking' could be explored a lot more. In general, I think that I will wait to see the 'Combined Army' force to makie a decision on - I am a sucker for the AI troops!

Has anyone else experienced this game?

Hi Iain,

Some of the local guys have a set, but I haven't played with them yet.

Frankly, I'm really not that much into larger-scale skirmish games. They often run slowly and I like the feel of smaller-scale tactical games better.

Infinity looks really top-heavy too, even if the miniatures are beautiful.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Chatting with Jervis a long while back I believe space crusade was where he got to try all his ideas and then decide to design games a little differently :)

SPACE CRUSADE? Pah! Space Crusade was the MB crossover which was an OK family game but was more of a board game than a wargame... although it did introduce the Chaos Androids and the Chaos Dread (I must get around to painting mine soon!).

Advanced Space Crusade is still one of my favourite games of all time... easily top three! Imagine Space Hulk, with a lot more flexibility, with exploration and strategy as well as tactics, diving prone, snap fire and aimed fire, grenades and melta charges, and loads more. I have tried to draw Jervis into a conversation about ASC, and if we ever meet that will be on my agenda, but he refuses to discuss it. Everyone seems to hate this game, including the designer, except me! I oculd go on about this game for a long time... in fact I am working on a sequal set of rules - Advanced Space Crusade Two, initally called ASCII (geek humour!) but now designated Exit Strategy. I still play this when I can and it performs as a use for my 40K minis.

Sorry CS, I meant the advanced one! (The one that took 3 days to finish if I remember correctly.)

I thought it was alright you know, bought mine in Koln at a discounted price when I was on a school trip, liked the imperial guard options that came out in wd. However I have to agree it was a mite clunky and space hulk had a massive edge! :)

Jervis seems willing to chat about it if you buy him a few beers - though admitably along the lines of 'I learned everything not to do in this game'.

Hi!

Never liked advanced space crusade much, not as much as space hulk.

Legions of Steel from the now defunct Global Games was pretty good.
