Quote (Mojarn Piett @ 23 Mar. 2006 (08:30)) | Back on topic, ASL had a whole module dedicated for a solo play system. It included things like random reinforcements for both sides and actually looked pretty good. Surprisingly ( ? ?) I happen to have that module; I'd probably have to digf it out to see what the system is like. Maybe it could be adapted to other games... ? | I have that module for ASL also. I haven't played it a lot, but from what I can tell it seems to work pretty well. I don't see why some of it couldn't be adapted to Epic.
E:A would probably work better for solo play than SM2, since you're not placing order counters.

This is an interesting idea, Epic is kind of suited for solo play I'd have thought?
If you use specific objectives you should be able to have alot of fun even if your on your own.
e.g. have one side with vastly overwhelming forces against another side set on survival.
The overwhelming force would have default charge orders as they cannot fire at the objective or similar such idea. (tryanids would be good for this) Then the defending force have to survive for a set period of time. The attacking force would have the advantage in numbers but no real strategy. The defenders would know what was required to win.
Might be worth looking at deeper when I get a chance.

Hi Guys,
There are some good solo games out there, but for the most part, solo gaming misses one of the very best aspects of a good game... being surprised. It's near impossible to surprise yourself.
Many solo games have randomizers to approximate this, but they'll probably never be able to provide you with a surprise like a human opponent can.
As such, give me a real-live breathing opponent any day of the week.
And to be honest, one of the reasons I game is for the social aspect so while the occasional solo game is fine, I prefer my gaming main course to be a social event.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

I agree Maksim, but sometimes those systems can give you a BIG suprise.
Ive also found that using my kids as enemy sub-generals can give the biggest suprise of all - they have no idea of how anything should work so do whatever they like without conventional (and expected) norms.
Who would have expected an enemy invasion force setup like this in Memoir 44? I just couldnt recover and lost badly!

And no you dont get the social aspects, but then if the choice is solo game or no game....
