As the subject says. If you were to try your hand at sculpting, where would you start? Meaning:
1) Which scale?
2) What kind of figure?
3) What materials would you pick up?
4) What tools would you get?
5) Anything else you can think up?

If you have been there and done that please share your experience. If you haven't, well, I'm as interested to hear what you _would_ do were you to start.

I have been toying with the idea of sculpting something for a long time but as I have a consistent history of diving to the deep end and giving up in frustration as my all too ambitious plans fail to succeed ( ) I thought to back up a little and start with a "scientific approach".  :p That is, to do some research before diving to the deep end.

P.S. I do remember Drasannar made a couple of fine posts on the subject but i'd still like to hear from others as well. After all, that's what research is all about.  :p

EDIT: I have already contacted Head Magos so he could move this to the correct section...

I've only every tried sculpting/scratch building in 6mm scale so I can't make any comparisons as to difficulty. However it is obviously easier to start with larger pieces such as titans or tanks rather than sculpting moustaches on your IG infantry. :p

Of course it depends a lot on what you want to achieve but I think plasticard is a good way to start. Get yourself a couple of sheets: some very thin stuff and some thicher (about 1mm). Also get yourself a selection of plastic rods and tubes. With these simple materials you can make a lot of nice things like armour skirts for tanks, extended gun barrels etc. etc. Since plasticard is so easy to work with you don't need any specialist tools: a hobby knife, superglue, fine grain sand paper and perhaps a pin vice is all you'll need.

Building basic studd is fairly easy as long as you start by building basic shapes and then gradually start to ad detail. For very small stuff (like my Epic Devastators with Plasma Guns you can carve the plasticard into shape. It takes some practice but again plasticard is a great material to work with IMO so you'll quickly get the hang of it.

Green stuff is a bit more tricky if it's the first time you use it. Remember to keep your tools wet so they won't stick to the GS. dip them in water regularly or (shock) lick them (probably not particularly healthy but hey, you only live once and it is just so much quicker :p )

If you're having difficulties getting the GS to stick to your model (especially if you're working with very small quantities) you can apply a tiny bit of superglue to the place you want the GS. That should keep it in place but remember only to use very little!

Don't try to sculpt too much in one go. There's a good chance you'll accidentally touch something you've just spent a long time getting right if you're working on a large area. It is better to sculpt a smaller area, then leave to dry over night and then add some more later. This way you can also add more GS on top of each other without everything turning into a messy blob.
If you want straight angles you can sculpt a pieve a bit bigger than it is suposed to be and then trim it down with a sharp knife or razor blade once dry.
For large pieces you can cut the rough shape from polystyrene, cover it with PVA glue, leave to dry and then add the Green stuff to that. That's what I did for my Feral Ork Madboy Airship.

For GS sculpting I'd recomend getting a needle with a handle made from GS (for a better grip) and a regular hobby knife. The GW sculpting tool is probably nice for larger stuff but I've never used mine for small scale stuff.

I think the most important advice is to start with simple stuff. If you've got little experience with GReen stuff don't start by sculpting a humanoid from scratch but rather do some conversions first untill you get a feeling with the GS's properties. Also don't necessarily sculpt everything on the models from GS. Sometimes it is easier to add some parts made from Plasticard or from other models kits instead of trying to sculpt them.

Hi Guys,

I recommend starting with either:

- Very simple modifications of existing models...

Or...

- Very square boxy machinery...

My first sculpt was a Necron monolith and I'm still working on it.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

If you want to do 6mm infantry, Green stuff ( or Brown stuff, better for sharp edges) really is the only way to go. Cheapest place I've found for it is Heresy miniatures website.
If you want to do war engines, or big stuff like Inquisitor scale, use Super Sculpey or Premo. Both work really well, and you can add GS details later. It's well worth joining 1Listsculpting on Yahoo as well. (I think thats what it's called anyway.)

I'd agree it's best to start with conversions first. I'll try and post a link to some of my converted infantry later. ( 6mm Marneus Calgar!)

Milliput's good, I started out using it. It can be smoothed with water, and can take very sharp edges. It is totally different to Green stuff, though, and needs a totally different style of use. Also, bee careful when licking tools - GS is fine, but Milliput is toxic!

Weirdly, you can actually mix GS and Milliput and get good results. It takes away some of the stickiness, and 'chewing gum' like surface tension of the GS, and allows the crisp, clean edges you get from Milliput.

Superfine White Milliput works best for this, as it is less grainy, and mixes easier with the GS.

Yes, well not everybody has the loot, er, _salary_ of a U.S. medical expert you know...

Thanks for tips, everyone. I think I know what I'm going to do when the war room is operational.  :)
