WARGAMING: The Shield Convention Report & More...

Hi Guys,

As many of you know I attended The Shield gaming convention this past weekend and had a good time.

Here's a short encapsulation of the convention:

Hi Mike,

I attended (Saturday-only) and had a good time... definitely $10.00 USD worth, although not $20.00 USD worth.

I only played in two games:
1. Pirates Games hosted by Flagship Games guys.
2. DBA Tournament.

I felt that there was good vendor attendence for a smaller
convention and ran into tons of friends that I've made over the years. I didn't see Ron's B-17 game (Avalon Hills B-17 Queen Of the Skies) although I did see him and his son.

One of the odder things I encountered was there being no
registration when I arrived. I actually had to track down Manny (the convention director) to pay him!

If I had to capture the feel of The Shield, I would call it a
slightly larger and more glorified MWS meeting... nothing fantastic, but there was plenty of good, clean and fun gaming.

I would go again.

The big reason I attended the convention was to play in the DBA tournament with my friend Dick. Dick was kind enough to bring armies for both of us. He played a Roman army and I played an Indian army.

The DBA torunament rules can be found here at The Shield web site:

http://www.geocities.com/ancientconfere ... ce_002.htm

Northern California 15mm DBA Tournament
- (4)Rounds-DBA
- Version 2.2
- Preset Terrain
- BUA's treated as bad going and all BUA rules ignored.
- No dismounting during the game by armies capable: must be dismounted at deployment.
- 2 Variations of army list may be used.
- Rounds will begin at 6pm on Sat.

I used the following Indian lists:

We were allowed two different variations of one list:

#1.
x1 Elephant general
x2 Elephants
x2 Chariots
x2 Cavalry
x5 Bow

#2.
x1 Elephant general
x2 Elephants
x2 Cavalry
x6 Bow
x1 Blade

I may be off a unit or two, but that's it or close to it off the top of my head.

The biggest news for me on a personal level was that I WON the torunament! I really wasn't expecting to do well... let alone win.

I think I was out-maneauvered and out-strategized almost every match, but...

I wasn't out-fought!

Sometimes, that's enough...

One of the bigger vendors there was Monday Knight Productions:

http://www.mondayknight.com/

I spent most of my "play money" with them and came out with quite a lot for my purchase... several stackable Battletech buildings, some small starfighters, some 6mm MAATAAC AFVs, a bunch of mini bases, and a 25mm resin vehicle.

The 25mm vehicle I ended up with was a big six-wheeled high-mobility affair. I couldn't find a link to it in 25mm, but I found its 6mm counterpart:

http://www.gtns.co.uk/store1....0.12070

It's product code and name are:
DSM-115 STRIKER MMRAV rocket artillery vehicle (MRL)

The top hull comes in two pieces and I'll covert a flatbed cargo area for the rear of mine to take the place of the rocket launcher. I plan to make the rear flatbed module magnetic so that I can switch the rocket launcher and cargo module in and out.

I'll be using the 25mm vehicle as a "Salvage Dog" for the Star Mogul campaign that my friend Mark is running.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Guys,

In other more personal news, it looks like Diana and I may be going our separate ways. We're separating amicably, but it's tough to separate from someone you've been with for several years.

She came down with her illness and hasn't been the same since. We've haven't been communicating like we once did. She cited different life goals as her biggest reason. I don't know about that, but I definitely would like to be with someone with better communication skills and who is more decisive.

Perhaps it's for the best, but it's still tough.

I am not looking forward to dating again...

Oh well, !que sera, sera!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Maksim,

Congrats on winning the tourney!

*** Was there any sort of prize for winning? ***

I looked at Monday Knight's website. I like their 6mm minis, especially the Terrans. I could see using them as proxies for Epic.

I'm sorry to hear that Diana and you are officially history. Breaking up sucks (usually :p ), especially when you still have feelings for your ex. I firmly believe that it's natural for couples to grow apart over time. I think that in the long run, it is for the best.

Yes, as the 1rst place, the host gave me a choice of having a custom 15mm base camp built and painted up by him (a relatively well-known painter) or a wargaming magazine.

Being that my DBA and HOTT armies are 6mm (not 15mm), I chose the wargaming magazine. It was one of the expensive ones with tons of game expansions for boxed wargames such as those put out by GMT and Avalon Hills.

MKP is the successor to the old Geohex and is a good company.

The MAATAAC 6mm sci-fi miniatures line is an old one. I believe that Primarch owns a number of their pieces and uses them for NetEpic.

It is probably for the best. She's been falling apart for some time under her stress and she wouldn't let me help her. As such, what was once a very strong relationship has suffered from entropy.

I probably should have seen it earlier... she's been distant for a few months now. I thought that by being supportive and helping her around every corner might do the trick. I was wrong.

In the end of ends, I'd rather have it end now than be married with children and in process of divorce. Someone who withdraws into themselves under stress and won't allow you to help them makes for a potentially troublesome partner.

I think she may have a fear of committment and possibly some other issues as well. She sees a counselor / psychiatrist.

I'm shooting for someone who doesn't regularly see a counselor / psychiatrist and take medications in my future dating.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

As a side note, I updated my blog and forgot to add these links here to the Pirates! game I played in:

I'm not overly fond of DBM, but I like DBA and HOTT a lot!

Hi Maksim (and everyone else)

Talking about HOTT, reminded me of a project that I worked on when HOTT first came out, a Techno Dwarf Army

From the following articles on my website:
http://www.ifelix.co.uk/art4.html
HORDES OF THE THINGS

HOTT already caters for the Techno-Dwarf with element definitions which cover most aspects of this medieval technology. Airboats covers various machines, whilst Flyers could encompass Leonardo's flying machines. Use Behemoths for those armoured landships and other machines of war. Artillery can cater for bombards and cannons, and for the handgunners use Shooters.

The following army list is only an idea of what a HOTT Techno-Dwarf army should be, please change at will and according to taste.

HOTT TECHNO DWARF

Behemoth General (armoured landship) @ 4 AP

Artillery (dwarven cannon) @ 3 AP

Shooters (dwarfs with arquebus) @ 2 AP

Blades (dwarfs with axe or warhammer) @ 2 AP

Flyers (dwarf mini helicopters) @ 2 AP

Alternatives: Airboat (dwarven airship) @ 3 AP, or Sneakers (party of dwarf adventurers) @ 3 AP

Check the original article for background information on technical innovation by Dwarfs.

Hi!

I agree that is better to find out and end such things at this point than to be married, have children and face this situation.

Thats what courtship is for, to "know" the other person and decide if she's really "the one."

Hi Primarch and Gang,

First of all, I want to thank everyone who responded... whether commiseration, sympathy, friendship or even chitter chatter, it was nice to focus on sonething other than having been dumped after two years of being a faithful and supportive boyfriend. Whos says nice guys don't finish last?

Thanks, guys!

I agree.

What I've been thinking lately is that you would end up resenting my ambitions, while I might chafe a bit at your quiet, simple life.

This was one of the last things she wrote me. After two years of standing by her, supporting her, and encouraging her in her PhD studies and I'm now "resentful?"

To be honest, I'm happy for anyone that can finish a PhD. They don't grow on trees.

Oh well.

I felt free today. I stopped by a store and a young woman flirted with me. It felt good. It's amazing what a difference you feel when you go from a committed relationship to being free again.

Oh, and the best news of all, my phone lines went in and were activated today so I am connected to the world again. I'm very happy about that. :;):

Here's to returning to the single life!  :p

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

There's nothing like that feeling of freedom after a relationship has ended. Yes, it sucks that it's over, but it's hard to replace that feeling of being able to do whatever you want, whenever you want and not having to worry about someone else. Being in a committed relationship has its advantages, but I definitely believe there is something to be said in favor of the single life. Plus, having a girl flirt with you is an added bonus!  :D

Congrats on having the phone line finally installed.  :)

I understand completely, I've been "playing games" with a female for almost TWO years... I keep trying to withdraw but she still hovers around... I don't understand females either.

I've been told the best "cure" is to find another!? But two years ago I was not looking and she "morphed" into my life. I'm just trying to get over her and get by...

Good Luck M/S... this male-female thing is a mystery to me?!

Einstein was even divorced!! :o0

If he couldn't make it work, we have no hope!!!

When I ask other females for advice about her... they say they don't get what's up with her either! :8:

If other females don't undertand her... how am I supposed to?!?!!?!?!

We are truely doomed... :alien:

Hi!

There is a saying is Spanish that roughly translates...

... Better to be alone than with bad company...

Society may put pressure in pair bonding, but that doesnt mean its right for everyone or with anyone. :;):

You and I aren't the only Spanish speakers here and I'm curious as to how sounds. I can picture a couple of different translations,

I had thought that after two years, we might have had something.

I got up this morning and wondered why she left me, but then again, I'm trying to focus on other things. I'm a good-looking guy with lots to offer... I need to move on. She's clearly acting nuts and there's nothing I can do about it.

I think you should skip out that one. She has sounded like trouble for some time.

I have a better idea of what I'm NOT looking for now.

Einstein may have been a genious with physics, but he had a very complicated social life. He wasn't always a gentleman to his wife so I can write off his divorce with some understanding.

Einstein led a very interesting life. I read a biography of him years ago.

I'm starting to come to the opinion that many women have no idea about each other's behavior. My sister, mother and platonic lady friends all seem to have no idea about how the others feel and act.
