I do like that the LotR minis are cheap.
I'm increasingly tempted to use a bunch of LotR minis for a Warhammer army. Riders of Rohan are dramatically cheaper than Kislev models, but with a few extra bucks for some cav bases, they would work great as a Kislev army. Same for the goblins/orks as a goblin/ork army.

I'm sure LOTR was the most profitable when the movies were out, but... I could have told GW's marketing "experts" that the LOTR bubble would burst shortly after the release of Return of the King.

Quote (primarch @ 10 Jan. 2006 (14:39)) | Add in the brisk ebay trade in cheaply obtainable 40k stuff and you have an interesting mix. | The secondary market is the main reason Wizard's of the Coast changed their tournament structure a few years ago to only allow the last 4 sets or so to be used.
They simply weren't making the money they were expecting on new sets due to the fact everyone was using the secondary markets to pick up older "good" cards rather than new ones.

Quote (Markconz @ 10 Jan. 2006 (18:23)) | Bad GW sales = LOTR gone. 'Nuff said. | That really depends on how long their locked into the licence for actually.
If they were stupid enough to sign a multi-year deal... anyone care to place a small wager that they were exactly that... they have to keep paying licencing fees *and* are contractually required to keep producing material to support the licence as well.
So, if the licence has say... 5 more years to run GW is going to have some very very big trouble in terms of static fees but a declining revenue stream with the LotR brand.

I'd forgotten that GW might be contractually obligated to continue producing stuff for a few more years. Chris Tolkien must be laughing all the way to the bank.

Didn't they get the licence from the moviemakers and not from Tolkien enterprises? IIRC a movie about a book is considered a separate work and not a derivative of the book in that particular part of the English speaking world; that's why the GW LOTR minis have to look like the actors.
IIRC Mithril still has the license to produce Middle Earth minis from the Tolkien Enterprises.
EDIT: Link to Mithril's site here.

I feel certain that Tokien Enterprises wouldn't have allowed sublicensing without approval. The UK and US are usually pretty close on IP law and in the US the degree of independence between licensed derivative works and the original is entirely up to the terms of the license.
My understanding is GW started with only the rights to things portrayed in the movies, but some time around TTT acquired expanded rights to produce anything in the 3 books (and maybe The Hobbit). For example, they did the Tom Bombadil/Wight Barrows set that (afaik) was never even considered to be included in the Fellowship movie.

But the barrow downs & Bombadil still was in the expanded DVD edition. Plus when they did the scouring of the shire minis they couldn't make sharkey look like saruman for just that reason.

No full images anyway (unless Mojarn got an even more expanded version) but there were references made in some conversations and the Old Man Willow scene was moved to Fangorn.
