Hi RB and Gang,
Quote (Reaversbane @ 11 Jan. 2006 (17:06)) | My feeling with Irregular was just that they had some quite poor sculpts (I meant to say my experience of Irregular was mainly historical and fantasy, I dont actually own that much modern), where other companies (which are more expensive) were doing better stuff. |
Again, try putting some paint on them. It's amazing how good Irregular looks with paint as opposed to bare metal.
Quote (Reaversbane @ 11 Jan. 2006 (17:06)) | I long ago came to the conclusion I could buy more figures than I could paint, by extension I stopped buying Irregular. They aren't terrible miniatures, I think I just got fussy in my old age. |
I can understand that.
Quote (Reaversbane @ 11 Jan. 2006 (17:06)) | As you say, they have a scary range of figs, and thats good. |
I have experience with much of their 6mm ranges:
6mm Irregular Ancients: Some of the sculpt are crude, but very workable and look excellent with paint.
6mm Irregular Napoleonics: I prefer the smaller H&R / Navwar sculpts or the larger Adlers. The sculpts are passable, but not my favorites.
6mm Irregular WWI: I like the WWI sculpts. Some of the pieces havea tremendous amount of character. Their WWI aircraft are OK, but I prefer other makes.
6mm Irregular WWII: Some of the sculpts came from the old Leichester molds, which are bad... very bad. However, some of the non-Leichester sculpts are very good. And the variety is awesome. Their WWII army packs are among the best-priced for 6mm WWII. They are even better than H&R / Navwar sculpts most of the time.
6mm Irregular Moderns: Most of the Modern line seem to be ex-Leichester molds, which are not attractive miniatures. However, the Leichester molds appear to be mostly vehicles. All of the infantry are cool. I bought a number of the Arab line supplemented by some WWII and Vietnam figures (for recoilless rifles and whatnot). The Vietnam line is very character-ful.
6mm Irregular Car Wars: I like the Irregular cars although many of them are very large for 6mm... probably closer to 8mm. They have a riot series, which has the same vehciles as the civilian cars and post-apocalyptic car sets.
6mm Irregular Sci-fi: The older SF series is very crude, but the newer NSF codes are very good. Some of their stuff is simply quirky and odd.
6mm Irregular Terrain: I like 6mm Irregular terrain. The vegetation is superfluous in my opinion (prefer tree armatures with flacking and vegation foam) and some of the walls are very thick, but most of the rest of their buildings are amazing. I have quite a bit of their line. The accessory set is very useful. I use the Irregular accessory set to fix JR Minis buildings. I still get a chuckle out of the "American village"... an American Western "town."
6mm Irregular Other: The character "posh packs" are very cool. I have also ordered odd bits from several of the other historical lines.
Quote (Reaversbane @ 11 Jan. 2006 (17:06)) | They do seem to be very decent blokes, although I have never met them in person. |
I really like Iain, very good fellow.
Quote (Reaversbane @ 11 Jan. 2006 (17:06)) | One thing I will say about them, they have the fastest delivery I have ever encountered. More than once I've got my order the day after submitting it, which is very impressive. |
That's to the UK.
The US distributor is lacking... Silver Eagle or some such. I ordered from Silver eagle three times with three problems including one where they told me that I ordered the wrong things and they wouldn't replace or exchange the mistaken minis so...
I order direct from UK Irregular now.
Quote (Reaversbane @ 11 Jan. 2006 (17:06)) | If I remember Maksim, I will try and post pics of my High Elves, if nothing else they should prove interesting reading (including the daft things I did to get a decent number of figs on a base...). |
I already have all of the 6mm Irregular fantasy armies so no worries.
I'm sure the other guys would love to see the figures though.
I also chop up Irregular bases to fit them onto my desired miniature base sizes.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
