Primach,

I'll be more than happy to see your Epic to DSII conversions. ?

======

Maksim,

I will also be writing you concerning the Centurion Rules.

======

Concerning the article...

It is an excellent article, but he doesn't convert all the vehicles and it is hard to judge the conversion if you know know what it was meant to do in the first place! :D

Hi Orde,

Quote (colonel_sponsz @ 04 Dec. 2005 (15:12))
Maksim (or anyone else):  I'm currently looking for some figures for a 'Nid army and, as I'm not going to wait for GW or pay E-bay prices, I wondered if you had any suggestions of where to get some figures.

I've made numerous lists of 'Nid proxies. You should check them out... they're all ove the site and many of them are pinned in various forums.

Your biggest difficulty will be to find line infantry substitues. Little tiny bugs are hard to come buy although small plastic ants and spiders can be found.

Bigger 'Nid nasties are much easier.

If you want to go with lead, GZG makes some wonderful 6mm bugs that have a good resemblance to Starship Troopers.

Quote (colonel_sponsz @ 04 Dec. 2005 (15:12))
I'm not bothered about exactly how they look as long as they are suitably bug like.
Orde.

Your cheapest choice are plastic party trinkets which can be had from party stores and importeres of "Asian plastic."

I always buy a handful of the best bugs when Is top by "Asian plastic" distributors. I've seen a number of good beetles lately.

The CMG D&D game has a good bug right now called Kruthik Hatchling. I'm probably going to use mine as Raveners although I have enough of them to use as infantry as well.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
Also check out the E-A 'Nid playtester area and ask this question again there. This question comes up semi-frequently.

Hi James,

I meant no disrespect with my comments on the Arab/Israeli background to the Q'Raj Void Protectorate.

I know and there's no worries.

Sorry if my response sounded too harsh. I just get tired of the tendency of Western sci-fi writers to simply the Arab-Israeli conflict (of which many of them are wholly ignorant) and assume that some new cultural conglomerate will come out of the conflict. For someone with first-hand experience, I find this annoying.

Quote (wargame_insomniac @ 02 Dec. 2005 (20:15))
I might personally disagree with it but ICE have tried to come up with a fictional backgound to SD that doesn't simply assume that they will carry on fighting even far into the fictional future.

ICE didn't do too badly, but even the name Q'raj gives away that the Jews were added into the background as a token at best. I read the Q'raj book long ago and thought the background story was more than bit far-fetched, which isn't neccessarily a bad thing for sci-fi.

Anyway I hope no offence taken.

No worries, You're a mate and pal. :)

Hi Maksim

Quite spookily this same issue came up quite separately by someone else on the SD Forum over the weekend. Here is Leland's reply:

<
No, I don't really buy it either. Nice fantasy though>>

Ahem. Dr. Sheldon Greaves, PhD, the author of Q'raj Void Protectoreate, is an *orientalist.* That means he's a more than qualified expert on the ancient Near East, as well as an acknowledged authority on the contemporary Middle East, its religious traditions, politics, and etc.(www.cupim.org). Now throw in the fact that the QVP is set *9,000 years from today,* and you have 9k years to monkey with history in!

So, IMHO the QVPs ethnic, religious, and social diversity is NOT unrealistic if the *current* crop of mutually hostile negihbors were able to avoid annihilating one another long enough for the old animosities to be worked out of the systems of the populace...and looking at history as I have and continue to do...don't bet the farm on it happening...or not!! Human history -especially the Near East/Middle East, is full of surprises (remember Anwar Sadat?)...

The history presented in the QVP House Book is IMO as perfectly plausible as anything else out there in science fiction, IMO probably more so than most. Human religious practices have done all sorts of coniptions, leading to all sorts of mass movements, from the not-so-nice (medieval witch hunts) to the very positive (Civil Rights Movement here in the US), and the downright tragically INSANE (Taiping Rebellion, 19th century China).

IMHO it is NOT outside the realm of the possible, even the plausible, that 9,000 years in the future -if humanity reaches the stars- that something akin to the QVP could very well exist! Hell, even THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK had a planet (Helion Prime) with a diverse Middle Eastern flavor...so IMO Sheldon wasn't off base in his highly imaginative yet well-grounded-in-history tome describing the Q'raj Void Protectorate and its eccentric inhabitants.

Just my two yuan's worth...

Hi James,

We all have out little fantasies. Leland too. I don't expect reality to creep up into our hobbies and the utterly improbable Q-raj Protectorate is a prime example of reality and fantasy not finding common ground.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

WARGAMING: Fun two weeks culminating in the 10 December 2005 MWS weekend meeting!

Hi Everyone,

I've been blessed the past two weeks or so...

Last Sunday I had a chance to play Assyrian Wars by Udo Grebe with my friend Vince Blackburn at another friend's house, Dave Hanifan. George and Jeff also showed up and we all had a good time. The components could have used better color differentiation, but all of us had a good time upon final consideration.

The Board Game Geek link to Assyrian Wars is here:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/8626

Last Tuesday, I found out that one of my favorite local gaming shops "Hobby Monkey" is taking a turn for the worse... less operating hours and several cancelled game tournaments including the immensly popular Formula De torunament, which really irks me because my racer had one of the top standings. The owner wants to close by 9:00pm on weeknights now (...sometimes 8:00pm) ?which really reduces the amount of time for gaming. Bummer...

I showed up on Tuesday at Hobby Monkey to find the poor Flames of Wars guys from Yuba City walking into an empty shop. We played a Formula De game, which they all liked. I was in first place until my car blew up in an unfortunate accident. Eric-Chern of Epic-Armageddon and Babylon-5 fame came in last place, but he finished unlike THREE of the rest of us! There were seven racers... pretty lethal race.

Yesterday, MWSS (Miniature Wargamers Society of Sacramento), had our monthly games day. Three games were hosted:

- 10mm (N-scale) WWII Eastern Front game with adapted ASL rules...
- 6mm/15mm HOTT Fantasy campaign...
- 15mm War of 1812 with Guns of Liberty rules...

I played in the 6mm/15mm HOTT Fantasy campaign and had a great time. I played two smaller HOTT battles (1 decisive win, 1 moderate loss) and played on the winning side of a Big-Battles-HOTT game which featured six armies (three a side) battling it out. General HOTT Dick Mitchell's "good consortium" (Elf army, human army and my magician's army) carried the day againt Ork despot General Carper's hordes (Orc behemoth/archer band, Orc blades band and Orc shaman band).

I tried out an interesting HOTT army of eight spearmen supported by two magicians in the last game. It was fun although my sides didn't do much more than have my magicians toss spells at the enemy (which scared a key enemy behemoth which was forced to flee) and have my spearmen hold part of the line looking tough.

While the games were technically part of the HOTT campaign, we won't officially kick off the campaign until the January meeting so the games were really "practice" ones. I'm already afraid of the really tough Orc armies. Marc Carper really knows his game. And what a beautiful miniatures painter he is!

Photos of his minis and all three of the games can be found in a folder labelled "12-10-2005" at the MWSS E-group here:

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/M_W_S/

After yesterday's game, Diana and I were invited to a wine-tasting by our friends Roger and Grace. Roger's my idea of a good guy to taste wine with, a former 82nd Airbourne paratrooper with an attitude! He's also one of the world's premier miniatures painters and his work is regulary featured in gaming magazines in the UK and USA. We had a good time even though we weren't behaving according to "wine-tasting decorum!" We both got in trouble with his wife at one point so we mellowed out. She takes "wine tasting" much more seriously than we did... at the time! Although I still insist that a few of the wines we "sampled" wouldn't have been good for lubricating even a Peugot. More like pee-eeuhhh!

We tried three French wines and three Napa Valley wines. I much prefer the Napa Valley wines from California. The French wines almost all had a bad aftertaste and I was happy to toss the rest of them in the "slops" bucket.

After the "wine tasting" there was a "white elephant" gift exchange. It's Murphy's Law that if you're Jewish, you will always end up with a Christmas ornament at a "holiday" (really Christmas) gift exchange. We (Diana and I) ended up with a set of diet books (The South Beach Diet Book and The South Beach Diet CooK Book) along with a... yeah, guess again... a Christmas ornament. I might just make a vow someday to make a version of Frosty with a Yarmulke! Dagnabit! :D

We gave the Christmas ornament to Grace and were able to swap our "books" for some kind of a "fancy schmancy" lemon liqueur from Italy. It's called "Limoncello" (spelling?). I haven't broken it open yet.

I've decided, all in all, that wine-tasting may not be my thing. The husband host was good and has started his own wine label, but the wife host, was bit schmarmy and her red thong underwear were hanging out in the wind. I wasn't going to say anything though... However at the first glance of her red thong, I vowed to not imbibe generously of the wine... get my drift! ?:p

Besides enjoing the company of Roger and Grace, I met someone who was an appreciator of Russian literature so I had a good time. Diana talked Baltimore football with the host and a few other folks.

All in all, the past two weeks or so have been good to me.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I've mostly been lucky on the wine front (my local wine snob grew up in Genoa, Italy.  I think that says enough.), but I know what you mean about wines not fit for motor oil.

Sounds like you had a pretty good time, though.

I don't consider myself a wine connoisseur or sophisticate.

I had an OK time. Being around pretensious people isn't my cup of tea, but I made the best of it.

Gandalf was kind enough to send me his unwanted GROPOS books and minis and I'm enjoying those.

Great minis, mediocre game.

Shalom,

Yeah, that's about my take on it.  I'd rather play with DS2 than mess with GROPOS.

Yet another case of Incredible Background, Awesome minis, Marginal-at-best Rules. (wow, sounds like 40k)

Hmmm... I may have a copy of Centurion 2nd edition floating around.  Let me do some archaeology, see where it got buried.  I even have a scanner I can abuse, with full adobe acrobat.  I'm pretty sure it'll be a huge file, though.  I have to muster Tuesdays and Thursdays the next two weeks, I should be able to find some time to abuse the computers.

I think Maksim is already working on it.  I'll let know know if I need to tap into that wealth of data.

I've done one better, I found you an entire boxed Centurion set for $8.00 USD plus shipping from me to you... box, rulebooks, counters and the whole shebang.

Let me know ASAP if you want me to send it to you.

Shalom,
