This is pretty basic question - I'm going to sculpt my first 100% custom-made miniature (thinking of either 54 or 108 mm scale, not sure yet), and I'm not quite sure how to do the wire skeleton so that it will allow for correct proportions when sculpting the rest of the mini. Any tips / tutorials?

Armature wire/decent not too bendy wire that will hold a pose, and a bit of solder is what you need... You can buy 'dollies' which are ready shaped into a basic figure, to save you making your own from scratch, but I'm not sure if these are available for larger scale minis of the sort you want (although I see no reason why they shouldn't!).

Thanks, Storm. Seems just like what I needed.
BTW, sculpting dollies seem a valid option - but at the current point I cannot buy them locally and mail order is out of queston since I didn't get a bank account yet (will correct this situation soon).

Hi!
Its something I've looked at, but I dont think I have the skill or patience to pull it off.

Buildings or large vehicles I think I could do, having seen how Snapdragon and Forgeworld have made their models.
But people/infantry/orks, different story!

If you're working in larger scales, you can also use aluminium foil to help bulk out initial shapes.
I've been working on a couple of larger pieces lately & have used a basic hard-wire frame, bulked out with cooking foil to get the basic shapes & save on putty.
Since I generally also sculpt in Fimo at the moment, the metal core helps speed up baking times
