WARGAMING: TMP Gladiator Contest!

Hi Guys,

I'll be leaving in a bit to visit my friend Andrew in Hercules, California, a suburb in the Bay Area a short ways from the city of San Francisco. Andrew asked me awhile back if I would be his partner for the TMP Gladiator Game contest and I readily agreed.

Here are some details of the contest:

http://theminiaturespage.com/contest/en ... eventry.mv

------

Andrew and I have known each other for several years and we originally met at an OGRE game he hosted at his house many years ago. We're both members of the SF-Bay-OGRE E-group and both enjoy Steve Jackson Games (SJG) products such as OGRE! I'm am certain that Tas knows him as well and Andrew has additionally has several of his gaming articles published in different OGRE books as well as a great OGRE cartoon.

Andrew also has his own OGRE web site:

http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Ca ... index.html

------

Last year at KUBLACON (2004), I played in his SJG Awful Green Things From Outer Space (AGTFOS) game and won with Diana as my partner. We had a good time and vowed at that time that we should get together more often. As all too often works out, our busy schedules have prevented our getting together since last year so I'm really looking forward to visiting tonight and using our partnership in the TMP Gladiator Game contest as an excuse to get together more often (He only lives about a half hour away from Diana).

------

We're planning to take a group photo for the contest, play some games with his kids (Probably Settlers of Cataan, but who knows?) and share a meal. We'll also be planning/strategizing how to go about the contest and planning an arena for the playtesting. Andrew has a garage full of dowels, foam sheeting, glue, etc. and he's sure we can build a simple but effective arena for our gladiators! It should be a lot of fun and I'm greatly looking forward to the get-together!

------

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

So why havent we seen your smiling face at TMP with the other entrants? :p

I also highly recommend using theFFgames Cyborgladiators for a bit of fun - especially if youve already made an arena.  My games usually last 15-20 mins and are most fun!

Andrew also has his own OGRE web site:

Cool site.  I miss doing my own, but I barely have time for any surfing never mind webauthoring.
The SF area GEV/OGRE group was always very active and I always wanted to visit and get some games in!

LOL! That was funny!
I really am not much into poetry; guess I'm culturally impaired. }:)
However, here's a: link

Hi Mojarn,

Thanks for the post. I enjoyed that poem you found awhile back and it was nice to read it again. I'm thinking about republishing it on my blog.

*** Would that be OK with you? ***

I have no problem with that. However, as you know I didn't write it and I don't know who did. And neither did the person who had it in his webpages. You might want to add a disclaimer saying that you don't know who wrote it and if anybody does know you'd like to know so you can officially ask for permission. Or something like that.

I'm trying to get ahold of my friend who has all of my spare Bio-Titans (Lent them to him so he could play a full 'Nid army) to finish off your trade list so I get it in the mail to you.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I'll be waiting.  :)

WARGAMING: "Elitist" Wargaming?

Hi Guys,

I recently read this post on TMP and it got me thinking.

Cabin4clw: OK here's the question. I've been gaming for 13 years and do historicals such as AWI, ACW, WW-2 among others.

*** Am I an elitist because I don't want to play fantasy? ***

I used to play some but now all I want to play is historicals.

*** Am I wrong? ***

Hi Cabin4clw,

You may be an "elitist" in some manners of evaluating your outlook, but...

For me, a true "elitist" is really someone who treats other he doesn't consiuder part of his "elitist" group in a lesser manner.

So, if you are treating fantasy gamers in a mnner lesser than the historical gamers you now associate yourself with then YES you are an "elitist."

If you are treating all of the gamers you know in an egalitarian manner, then you just have your own set of tastes regarding your hobby and that's both perfectly acceptable and very normal.

I tend to game with a local club that prides itself as a "historial gaming club," which is fine with me as long as they are willing to let a little fantasy and sci-fi sneak in some of the time... and they do. At the last group meeting (Roughly 50+ attending), we had a pulp fantsy game with zombies, and the like. It was fun and those interested played and those not interested stuck with the more historical offerings.

I've been planning to bring a "Star Wars: Battle of Hoth" game to the club for some time now and have tested the waters by asking various member if the club if they'd be willing to playtest the game wth me. The majority said they'd be happy to including the club president and several of the most die-hard historical gamers.

Live and let live.

Having said that, I do like the historical concentration of the club I locally game with. I can always go by a hobby shop to see fantasy and sci-fi games being played.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.
