I'm pretty new at this kitbashing thing, having done a deodorant-container Grav-Attack and a tupperware Drop Pod recently. I'm considering adding some air-power to my Ultramarines army (the 28mm one, that is. The li'l Astartes have planes already!). However, the Forgeworld models are out of my price range. Does anyone have a suggestion for what I should base my kitbash on? And what scale, 1:72? Thanks.

For 28mm I'd suggest 1/48. 1/72 would be good for 15 to 20mm scale. And modern jets are your best bet. As scale precision is not an issue in this case buy the cheapest one you can find.
A rough recipe to make a Lightning:
Take any two-engined fighter model (F-15, MiG-29, F-18, Su-27, MiG-31 etc.). Cut the nose at the level of the air intakes, move canopy backwards and shorten the hull somewhat. Turn the wings around so that they form an "y" instead of the delta shape, add some bitz & plasticard here and there according to taste.
For Thunderbolt I'd suggest MiG-15 or Sabre or something similar but the angular hull of the Thunderbolt is more of a problem and takes more work. Of course you could just ignore it and say they are of some obscure pattern made during the great crusade or something.

You could also do a Marauder more in line with the SG Epic version. I think a 1:48 scale "Sturmovik" would make a good starting point. Add some guns instead f the propeller and build a couple of engines on the wings.
For the Thunderbolt a Messerschmitt Me 109 would be an excellent starting point. (I think the FW designers had a good look at this plane before building their own...) Again replace the propeller with guns and build some sort of jet engines on the wings.

28mm is ~1:64, iirc.
If you are going to use it in an actual 40K game, I would start with the 1:72. It's closer and smaller would be more likely to look good with the other models, imho. In-scale aircraft, while "realistic" (always hate to use that term), will tend to be overwhelming on the table.

Yeah, but 1/48th tanks are about the right size (says the man building Predators out of Merkava MBTs)
I used the 1/72 scale Italeri X32 for my 'Marine TBolt variant', but I'd rather have used a 1/48th (the marine looks kinda scrunched in the cockpit). 'Course, I also dropped the $110 to get a 1/32 two-seat A10, by Trumpeter. ?Can y'all say Thunderhawk?

Yeah, I figured WWII would be the way to go for both the Marauder and the Thunderbolt. Those more-or-less straight wings, mounted near the nose... What about a B-17 as a Marauder? Or would that be too big?

Hmmm... don't have a B17 model. I'd guess that 1/48th would be about right, though, if such a beast exists.
L4, a Focke Wulf 190 looks better than a Me109 as a TBolt. If I was going to make a new one, that's what I'd use.

If WWII plane was to be used I'd actually recommend F4U Corsair as it hasthe basic shape is about right: canopy is located to the rear from the wings. Of course, the canopy of the Thunderbolt is even further back so shortening of the back hull is in order. See pics HERE.
IMO the only thing resembling Me-109 in Thunderbolt is the canopy.

We have a winner! That Black Widow is cool! I love those P-38-style double tails. It may not look much like my Epic models, but it's weird enough for the 41st millennium. And the price is right (oh, how right it is)! Thanks, guys!

Hi Guys,
As kind of a weird sidenote, I have a project on my bench in microscale where I have been combining three main pieces:
- Microscale P-38 Lightning
- Silent Death Starfighter
- GZG shrouded VTOL Engine
I have been using these pieces to make my own VTOLs for an IG army I've been working on for some time now.

Oh one more thing, what sort of kit do y'all think I should use for the 4 jet engines I'll need for a Marauder at 1/48 scale? A B-52?

Propeller engines without the propellers might look cool enough. All you need to do is extend the back end just a bit and add a piece of tubing for the exhaust. You could then always detail it a bit more with a few strips of plasticard. Might be easier ( read: cheaper) than buying an entire extra model kit just for the engines.
