I'm a RL Submariner, SSBNs, actually, and I'm looking for a reasonable representation of nuke boat conflict.  Submarine vs Submarine, with detection ranges, you name it.

Has anyone found something?

When I was in High School, e called going to the beach to neck "going to the submaine races". So you could imagine the answer I would give to the subject line. :p

Hello Lion in the Stars,

Another navy guy - excellent!  I am an ASW Officer by trade so I am professionally obliged to dislike you.  Dont take that personally though, my sister is a submariner too and it applies to her also!

Back OT, sadly, I have never found a playable submarine table wargame.  Because of the stealth issues, you becoem restrcited to pencil and paper planning to preserve the integroty of he boat and thus its very very dull.

PC games are by far the best bet for submarine action IMHO.  There are some great ones out there nowadays too!

Good Luck!

Well I say this with grave concerns.

Harpoon 4 is propably the game your looking for, but your'll need a gamemaster to handle detection.

Check out

Clash of Arms

I belive the program my freind made to handle Fear God and Dreadnoaught can easily deal with double blind movement.

But we haven't taken it that far yet.  In time we will.  With escorts hunting subs who are hunting merchant ships.

Good luck on your search and Welcome

At least that has one side on the table - and older games, WW2 and before, the Sms did lots of surfaced attacks at night and the like.

Modern SM v SM engagements are like walking aorund a darkened football field with a blindfold carrying a sword!

I agree Harpoon or the like is probably the ruleset to use, but I dont think it would be a very enjoyable game.

Dont get me started on this. I have been looking for a decent sub game for a long time, and I have not found one yet. As already mentioned, Harpoon will probably do the job better than most games.

Aside from that, I found a few which were OK but not great, but I am away from home right now. If you are still interested in six weeks, drop me a PM. If you find anything good, pelase let me know!

Hi Lion,

Harpoon is a great game. I have the sub book and it works very well.

Having said that, I prefer missile boats and small combatants and Harpoon really works better for larger naval engagements.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I started work on a near-future sub game, Krazy Ivan which was aimed specifically at non-submariners and I knew would be about as realistic as an unrealistic game could be.

It was more a subs in space game than a a realistic simulation of subs....

Remember these are unfinished...

I know of a good WWII sub boardgame, AH's "Submarine." It doesn't use minis; all the pieces are cardboard.

Thanks, guys.

I may need to chase down that 'Full thrust' mod that I saw a few (too many) years ago, then, and play with it.

Tas, there's only two kinds of ships:  Submarines, and TARGETS.

We've got some great pictures at work of various ships, usually with the lookout in the crosshairs. [evil smilie]  Or there's our other favorite 'game':  find a diesel sub snorkeling at periscope depth, then flood-down and open all torpedo tubes.  Listen to the 'OH, [deleted by the Inquisition]' as the diesel desperately tries to run from you.  Then call the diesel on the underwater telephone and say 'Tag, you're it!'

It SO amuses me that guys even believe your own propaganda and think this is true - My sister and I have rather animated dinner conversations when we infrequently meet up!

OTOH, I have NEVER seen a diesel loose a knife fight vs a Nuke whe it isnt snorkelling

I too have some cool photos at work, of smashed and broken submarines :)
I like using an electric razor on underwater telelephone to make realistic torpedo noises.  Spooks you guys...:p

Nothing like a bit of friendly rivalry is there?!  :D

Tas, I served on the Missile Boats.  We can't even find each other when we know where the other guys is supposed to be, let alone someone else find us in open ocean.  Yes, diesels are godawful quiet (I'm pretty sure the phrase 'hole in the ocean' was invented to describe them), but you would not believe how quiet boomers are.

I will grant surprise to the Diesels in littoral waters, but nukes own the open ocean.  The SSGNs are going to be interesting.  The phrase that keeps surfacing in my mind is 'I'm too damn big to be sneaking around like this'.  Just spoke with a Fire Control tech.  He says that missile boats still have an advantage over diesels.  Maybe our teams should arrange a little get-together.  Mid-Atlantic work for you? :D

Smashed and broken subs?  Must be WW2 German/Japanese, or newer russian.  The American bubbleheads get irritated with people laughing about the Thresher, Scorpion, Bonefish, or San Francisco.  Those were all fatal accidents.

Friendly rivalry?  Absolutely.  We get inside the carrier's ASW screen, the officer's on the carrier buy for the entire sub crew.  We don't get inside, we were never there in the first place!:p

You guys are almost as bad as the freaking birdies and knuckleheads!
The only thing you have going for you over them is that I dont have you laying around in my ship...

Absolutely - they are old rusting Oberons and WW2 hulks. ?Accidents arent funny or for joking, and every Navy has their own tales of woe.. ?We are all only minutes if not seconds aways from fatal accidents at sea.

Good luck with your new life!

No, we're laying around UNDER your ship! :D

Thanks.  Stay safe out there.  Life is so much less fun if there's no skimmers to abuse. :p
