I was going through my files and came across an excellent article by "Jaldon" on how to take epic games to the next level. Towards the end of the article, he introduces examples of unit & character history and an award system. On that note; I was wondering if anyone does that?
I put together an example of a unit award badge plus a medal influenced by an American award for infantrymen who have been in combat (CIB). I know there is a points based experience chart but I like to have something visual.

I'm not sure what it is either, but it looks cool!

It reminds me of the Purity Seal prizes Signius and I half completed when I ran the 2003 Epic Painting competition- but then he went offline in a big way before they could be finished

Which article is that one you refer to centurion?

Hi,
Point is does anyone go so far as to assign named characters to their formations and award them for outstanding service during a game. The concepts I illustrated is just my version of an award system. I guess you have to read "Jaldon's" article to get the idea and better understand. Thanks "-AL" for the links. :;):

Yes, the article does help make what you are asking clear and does also help me understand the marker you made.

So to answer your question; No I do not do this. I do not dislike the idea, I just did not think of doing it to such detail.

Now to answer a few more questions:

Do I think that if a person does not do this they are not a great gamer? No. I think this is something that will appeal to some and turn off others.

Do I think this could be fun for those who like this kind of thing? Yes, I do.

I just do not see myself spending the time or effort of keeping such detailed lists. Besides not getting to play as often as I would like, I am often faced with quick pick up games when I do get to play. I do not see myself limiting myself to just one list ever.

But be that as it may, I do like the concept and can think of two friends I am going to forward the idea to.

I do :D , boy I bet there isn't anybody here that doesn't find that surprising.

In one respect dafrca is correct when he says this isn't for everybody.

Just as I would never go into the level of detail Bob does, Rich would never get into the level of detail I do, while others do the bare minimum, or nothing. With almost no exceptions the guys I game with at least name/number their formations, and keep a brief track of their adventures.

However, I disagree that it takes a lot of time and effort. If you do the bare minimum and just name/number the formations, and put that on an index card and keep it with the army, (We all have our army's in a carry all container of some kind, don't we, and don't laugh I use Pizza Boxes, so there is a place to keep the card.) then it takes very little effort to set up and carry out.

You also aren't 'forced' to keep the same TO&E, just treat it like the formation has recieved a temporary upgrade, and move on from there.

(I am not trying to pick on you dafrca, just trying to use what you said to show people there are many more options available then those presented in the article.)

90% of Rogers gaming is pick up games, and he uses the Name/Number the formation, a simple index card for his army's core formations, and the rest are just treated as upgrades or temporary attached troops. This allows Roger to concentrated his efforts on just keeping track of the handful of formations that he uses all the time, while allowing him to create different army lists all the time.

So dafrca you could just concentrate on making a card for a couple of your most used key Epic-A formations, and as long as you keep the cards with the army be able to get in on the fun. (I would make a lousy salesman :{  Hey I had to try :laugh: )

The truth is, it is an individuals choice to do this, the only thing I do claim is that it will increase your enjoyment of the game, any game.

Hi,
          I for one enjoy going that extra step. Since I collect and paint only space marines ( okay, titans too), I have more of an inclination to do these kind of projects. Here is another example of a formations history. The figure denotes the formation; in this case tactical, the three studs denote 15 to 19 battles(each stud represents 5 games) the formation has fought and the 2 purity seal represent 2 games in which the unit was mentioned in "dispatches"(unit of the game so to speak).

Well we still like/use the SM1 TO&Es/Templates (Doug posted some of ours on a thread here, I forget which one ?!) and modified/convert SM2 system.  I gave my IG numerical designations of units I served with ... 3/187, 1/31, 1/58 Inf; 2/69 Arm, 3rd and 197th Bdes.  :D

Not to worry. I think the skip could be the number of games played, the number of Armies owned, and also be the differant collection sizes.

If one were to own only Marines, and owned only 3-5K of Marines, the idea would take little time over the life of the game. Once set up it would be easy to track.

But if one were to own 4 armies like I do, and they had more then 150,000 points between the four like I do, then we are talking about quite a bit of extra paperwork. It is already hard to track the collection as it is. Keeping in mind they do not make a box large enough to hold the whole thing that one man could carry.

Now if I were to get them finished painted into smaller "sub-armies" like I have planned, then it might be fun to slowly do it accross the collection.

But to your point, each person could do the level of detail that makes sense for them.

Well, yes if you own many armies then beginning the entire project, even in small detail, would be daunting.

Fortunatly I started doing it when I first started playing Epic back in the SM/TL days, and as the armies were collected and painted the cards were made. (SM Dark Angels/White Scars/Space Wolves, IG Necromundan/Praerotian, Ork Horde w/ability to make Feral and SF, CSM, LatD, Eldar Saim Hann, Tyranid with Titans for all of them except Eldar)

Each change of the game has required a change in the force structures on the cards themselves, and a bit of work, but if you don't try to do it all at once it isn't too daunting a task to accomplish the task.

Pizza boxes I tell ya, Pizza boxes :p
I made dividers for the insides of the Pizza Boxes, so the formations could be seperated out, made a second 'shelf out of the top/bottom of another Pizza Box, made dividers and ouside 'walls for it, glued thin foam to the bottom and sides of each, then glued an envelope to the top inside of the Pizza Box lid for the formation cards. Each of my armies fits easily into each Pizza Box.

Then, with vital dimension numbers in hand, went to the nearest local variety store (K-Mart/Wal Mart) and asked to see their boxes before they cut them up. Got two of the right size, and home I went.

Using 1"x2" slats I reinforced the boxes corners, put in three cross struts on each side, for strength, and put the Pizza Boxes inside. You don't have to go this far but I put some cheap plastic lam on the outsides of each of the Pizza Boxes to protect them from moisture.

Collection is portable, safe, easy to pull out, easy to put away, and ready for action ASAP :D

So, who do I get to eat all the pizza so I can have the boxes. :p

I figure, with two layers, my IG would need between 10 and 12 boxes. Marines only two or three. The orks would need one. The Eldar, five I am guessing. The Titans, well they might have a harder time because they would need to lie down to fit, so I guess three boxes. So let's see that is 21 to 24 boxes. That should not be too bad. Of course that is also assuming I do not split them up by "sub armies". :;):
