I do not want to sound like I doubt your resolve TRC. In fact, if it does come out sooner, it will be in large part because of efforts like yours. If you can make it come out sooner, well then, great!

My doubt is in SG and their resolve. Will they allow JJ to do what he has set out to do? Or will they get cold feet long before the bottom half of the list is realized?

That is where my fear comes from.

Well, this was part of the commique about schedules on the old forum.
The main purpose of this change is to help focus attention on some of the army lists with the aim of actually getting them finished and published (I know, a radical concept, isn?t it!) Lists that are bubbling under will remain in the vault and players will be able to provide feedback on the forum, but we will try to encourage the community to direct the bulk of its attention towards the key projects in order to help us to get them finished on time.

The Key Projects we will be focusing on first are:

Epic Armageddon 2nd edition rules
Black Legion
Lost & Damned Chaos Cult Army List
Tyranid Army List
Tau Army List

KEY PROJECT DEADLINES

One thing that will differentiate a key project from a list that is bubbling under is that a key project will have a deadline. The deadline will be the date that the completed army list must be handed over to me and the Epic Rule Committee for approval. Most of the time this will be a rubber-stamping exercise, but if a list needs some changes, then it will be bounced back to the champion and new deadline set based on the amount of changes that are needed. Here are the deadlines for the key projects listed above.

2nd EDITION EPIC RULES: As you know, my policy is to only print FAQs and errata for the existing rules, and save any changes to ?new editions? of the games and army lists. This begs the question, when will a new edition of the rulebook be released? The short answer to this is that I don?t know, but I would like to be in a position to publish a new edition at the end of 2006 should I have the chance to do so. This means that we will need to have any changes to the current rules and army lists in Epic Armageddon ready by the end of June next year ? which gives us just over a year to get everything ready. A major project if ever there were one!

CHAOS ARMY LISTS (Black Legion and Lost & Damned): Work is well under way on both these army lists. I would like to set the deadline for handover for both of the lists as the end of September this year, which will give us until the end of the year for the ERC to approve the lists in time for them to be published (online) to coincide with the re-release of the Epic Chaos range. This is quite a tight deadline, but I?m sure we can do it : )

TYRANIDS: Unfortunately, we won?t be able to get the Tyranids back into production as soon as I?d hoped. They were scheduled for Autumn this year, with Chaos in the Spring next year. The Chaos range will go ahead as planned, but the ?Nids have tumbled down the schedule for a wide variety of reasons (to tedious to list here), and now won?t be out until ?07. None the less, I would like to release the Tyranid list as soon as possible, so that players with a collection of Tyranid models can use them. I?ll publish the list in such a way that it is clear that it is for use for players that have a collection of the currently OOP models, but that we will be bringing the range back at some point in the future. Because of this I?m going to set the deadline for handing over the ?Nid list as Christmas this year, with the aim of getting it approved and released 2-3 months after the Chaos army comes out.

TAU: It doesn?t look like I?ll be able to get a Tau range out for a few years yet, which is a shame considering that the Tau list is a good one and looks like ti will be ready long before the models are. However, there has been an important change in the way that Fanatic is allowed to deal with FW models: from now on, we will be allowed to produce official rules allowing the models to be used in tournament games (note that this is a change from our previous policy). What we can?t do is dictate to Forge World which models they make ? this is their decision, and theirs alone, and I can?t try and influence it. However, if they do bring out models and we want to write official rules for them, we can now do so. The new rules can either be added to existing army lists when we print a new edition of the list, or included in new variant lists that we publish. So, what I would like to do is publish the Tau list ASAP, so that players can use it with the FW range of models. When we publish the list we?ll explain that there are units in it that we hope to be able to release at a future date, but for the time being players should just go ahead and use the FW models or other suitable ?stand-ins?. You never know, this may encourage FW to make some new models to fill in the gaps in the list before we do so. I?m therefore going to set the deadline for the Tau as the end of March next year, with the aim of getting the list approved and available about 3 months after the ?Nid list.

OTHER LISTS: Note that if a champion feels that a list that is currently ?bubbling under? is ready, then they can submit it for approval at *any* time. It's just that in my experience a designer will work on a list (or set of rules) as long as possible, and because of this I think it unlikely many champions will submit before we've set a deadline. If it happens, though, then I've no problem at all with publishing an approved list as soon as it's ready.

In summary, this new plan gives us the following schedule:

Both Chaos Army Lists ? September ?05
Tyranid Army List ? Christmas ?05
Tau Army List ? March ?06
2nd edition Rules & Army Lists ? June ?06
Other Lists - ASAP

I am a patient man, but the pessimist in me says that we'll be lucky if the plug hasn't been pulled on epic by '07, never mind 2010. I hope I'm wrong. I would be ecstatic if epic was still in production 5 years from now.

Hmmm... I think the result of this will answer your thoughts:

2nd EDITION EPIC RULES: I would like to be in a position to publish a new edition at the end of 2006 should I have the chance to do so.

If a new ruels version actaully gets made end 2006, then I think you can count on a few more years of Epic production.

If it falls by the wayside, however, your fears may become a sadly accurate prediction.

I'm off to chant with dafrca now...  :p

I did read TRC's timetable yesterday and I hate to admit it (being the eternal pessimist that I am  :p  ), but I was somewhat encouraged. Talk of 2nd edition core rules is heartening. As I've said all along, I hope my feelings of impending doom are wrong.   :L

Thanks for the info The Real Chris, even tho the schedule does stretch out alot and the Nids one of my personal favorites are being pushed back I am still extremely glad to find out what is being planed and what is changing, on average if I dont see any effort to update or inform about ongoing projects then I tend to beleive nothing is going on at all. Seeing otherwise is therefore good. I do wonder about the mention of epic 2nd edition tho, I'm a little puzzled by this as the rule set is very good and seems to need only very minor tweeking in my opinion, certainly not a whole new edition, unless those changes are intended to be very small. Anyway thanks.

I agree ... the E:A rules are generally very well done.  But talking about 2nd Edition is a little disconcerting ... the 1st Edition is still "new" and only 4 armies exist, in hard copy ! ???

I think the idea of "hard copy" is going to need to be revised, given that everything will be electronic from here on.  There are 3 armies in the core rules, 3 in Swordwind, and 2 published for official use.  That's a total of 8 armies, even if it is only 4 races.

2nd Edition is basically what the ERC is working on with the rules review, so the vast majority of the changes are available in the experimental rules in the vault.

Neal,

I agree that in the new age of Epic the words "Hard Copy" will need to change. If the Final Approved PDF is published, that may be all we get.

But to defend the point slightly that L4 was making, because I believe it is valid, SG needs to push harder to get the core armies out and then focus on the "side" or extra army lists.

I do not care if SG published 1,000 Army lists if all of them were just variations of Marine Lists. To me, I see the Ultra Marine, Dark Angel, White Scare, Blood Angel, and Space Wolf lists as just variations and thus do not count toward the issue.

The truth is, SG wasted some valuable time and resources on lists that, in my opinion, should have been just PDF releases without minis needed and failed to publish lists for core armies that needed new minis. That is at the core of L4s comment and I agree with him. 8, 10, or 500 PDFs will not change that.

In any case, I will top the GW bash as it was not meant to be one per say. I will end with saying, I agree that the new wave will be PDF releases and so be it.
