You have reminded me of the "good old days" when I was in Guam, and part of the Andersen AFB Wargaming Group. We would play in the B-52 wing's ready room building, and there would be a different wargame going on in each room. One room would have Star Fleet Battles, another would be a WWII Naval simulation, Napoleonics over there, and so on.

Thanks for the memories.

As a aside I would add that the Warmaster conversion for WWII does a very good job at simulation, essentally following the points above and reaslising that the similation aspect of such a period is overall troop quality and advantage mixed with command and control effectiveness. The dice give the 'ramrod effect' (thats a phrase that sould enter common parlance) and the flow of the battle and result is 'historically accurate' (or close enough).

I must confess if left to my own devices I start abstracting like mad to try and fullfill the twin goals of simulation and fun/speed, so go in the opposite direction to an extreme!

In a chat with Jervis a couple of years back in london he outlined his basic design philosepy sometimes appeared to him to be ultra simple lean clean rules, then mess them up with detail and fluff to please all the gamers :)

The Epic:A rules seem to be even written like this: we have section 1 with the core rules. Just a few "chrome bits" here, like crossfire, barrages and assaults. We can tell they are chrome, because they mess up the basic core. Crossfire has the "fiddly" extra bm and save modifier, barrages have placement rules and a table, assaults have the intermingled thing.

All the other rules are, of course, pure chrome :)

Jervis has always said to use the rules as a guide and change what you like. ?I like about 85-90% of the E:A rules and they work for me and my concept of reality and playbility/fun. I generally like the Air rules but we simplified them by dropping Air2Air (this ain't "Air War" ), aircraft are on and off, that's their move, etc. ?We like some other things from SM1 mostly and a little SM2 and E40K etc. and will "meld" those in, because we think it is fun AND logical. ?We like the Firefight concept, but feel the close combat rules are too much of "like 40K", too detailed for us and we'll modify those, to suit us. ?Some of the weapons ranges are a bit short for us, so that's an easy fix (based on SM1), etc. ?I guess my use of the terms realism, real world experiences and references to AH, SPI etc. were taken the wrong way by some. ?Based on bad experiences, like Jaldon's with what he calls "intellectuals" in his well written piece/rant above. :D  I'm no intellectual ! ?I've played wargames since the late 60's (!), I served from '79-'90 as a US Army Infantry Officer (in 4 Infantry Bns plus other combat units) plus 4 years as a cadet before that ('75-'79), and have been Epicing since '90 when I became a civilian, but still served in the Reserves for awhile. ?So I have some military experiences and knowlegde. ?My point is my ideas of reality-playability-fun may be different than others, but what I say is only my opinion. And I always say "Do what works for you", and we always go with that on this site. In an "intellectual" discussion, all points of view are welcome ! :D ?And my only criticism Jaldon, is you should have sold your SPI online to guys who like that kind of game. ?And use the $$$ to buy Epic ! ?I've done that before, too !

I think the entire essay comes down to this:
The UBSG was a group of intellectuals that believed that war could be accurately transferred to the table top/hex map...  not a single member of that organization ever spent a second in any military uniform.

At this point, did anyone reading that have the slightest doubt what the net outcome would be? :D

Nice work Jaldon.:)

And i'm amazed that anyone thought that SPI's Grenadier was good enough to use as a set of wargame rules.:O
They were dreadful.

It reminded me of when i started gaming back in the late Seventies.WRG Ancients and SPI Prestags....and D+D.

Aye...i'm old.:D

Wargame rules have definately got simpler over the years , look at fire and Fury for ACW , or Spearhead for WW2 and Modern. And as for Skirmish ,  Red Poppy- White Feather with its unusual initiative system is outstanding.

I didn't throw out all my SPI stuff, I still have the first six S&T mags, you know the ones with the 'Siege of Kronstadt" in them and the pretty neat skirmish game Redmond and Simenson dreamed up. Blitz Mod, CA, USN (but I still don't know why I keep it), a playtest version of Tannenburg with the playtest module planned for 1914 both of which were a real good system before Dunnigan 'fixed' them, The East is Red, Invasion America, and Terrible Swift Sword.

Jaldon's Most Notable Door Stops via SPI: the Central Front Series, A Bridge To Far (I think).

I am almost afraid to post when I was in, you guys might begin to believe I am a senile old man and stop answering my posts:p

Thanks for all the kind words people.

Jaldon:O
