Just turned on the News ... very sorry to hear that these lunatics are still able to do such things.  Too many innocents ...  Best wishes and condolences to all in the U.K.  The war continues ... and the evil is real ...

I just don't understand why they are warning Denmark and Italy - what have they ever done?!?

I think our involvement in Iraq and our government's very USA friendy politics may be part of the reason.
However I think it is a political discussion better left for another time and place (and one which could all too easily become volatile). For the moment being let's concentrate on the tragic events taking place in London.

I must say that I am very impressed with the way Londoners seems to be handeling the situation. Things could easily have turned out much worse if everybody had just panicked. Dire circumstances tend to bring out the best in people and this has been no exception.

As for the group claiming responsibility for the attacks: I think it is really sad that some deluded people seem to think that violence against innocents is the only solution to their problems. What bothers me the most is that they have once again managed to grab the media's attention and removed focus from the otherwise very positive events unfolding in Edinburgh for the past couple of days.

Italy has been warned before, even mentioned by Bin Laden himself, mainly due to our involvement in Iraq (I think we have the third biggest contingent, after USA and UK) and the general USA-friendly government foreign policy.

However, sources from Italian secret services have warned that the claim doesn't look genuine. The gorup has never been heard of, and the site was already decried in the past as false by Islamic fundamentalist groups. So I wouldn't put much trust in that particular piece of craziness yet.

It will take more than this to make Londoners panic. We have been through random acts of violence and the threat of bombs for decades now (I remember police checking the rubbish bags outside where I used to live every evening).

I hope that the few London board members are OK (Furgie, Wargame Insomniac). It seems that the incident is over and the clear up and questions are starting.

I was no-one where near it, and so I was shocked to hear about this, and local institutions like my own are providing support where they can.

Thanks for the note. I hope that everyone is unhurt.

Absolutely.
I've just recieved a reply from my mate and all is ok with them though his brother has a 'long walk home' (he is rather laconic)

Strange that they have yet to publish an emergency contact number.

Here and well, in work at the moment covering for others who have left early.

I got off my overground train in the city just after it all begain, the tube network was down and as I walked across the city (I live east, work west) buses began stopping and alighting people and policemen began appearing, armed, on street corners. Most londoners just take this in their stride now, I only tend to get concerned when I see armed bobbies like this morning.

I can't see what they hope to gain - good press coverage perhaps, but that's all. Days like these come and go, Londoners cope, get on and forget.

For anyone trying to reach friends via the mobile networks, the services have been up and down all day. There were some reports that the services had been cut to stop mobile phone detonators from working.

I hope everyone, friends and friends of friends are OK.

Strange that they have yet to publish an emergency contact number.

The only number on the BBC site is given thus:
"The police set up a casualty bureau number on 0870 1566344"

My sympathy and condolences to any who were hurt or had family members hurt it those attacks.  I heard the news this morning as I was getting ready to sleep, about 8:00 EST, and all I thought about was wether any of the members of this board were there.....  I hope everyone is accounted for.

Well it looks as though it is not nearly as bad as I feared when I heard the initial reports... I certainly hope the incredibly low casualty estimates being reported so far are not far from the truth. I was expecting another Madrid or worse.

I know what you mean. When someone says that there were bombs on three underground trains in the rush hour, it brings horrible images to mind. 40 dead is never good, but it could have been so much worse. We can only hope that the security cameras caught them.

I made the mistake of looking on the Yahoo discussions about this. My God, there are some idiots out there! I expected the fanatics, but some of the Americans are very disturbing.

There is an emergency number for this, but only for those wanting word of friends or relatives - it is not an information line.
