Hi. Does anyone else play this modern naval wargame? I picked up the rules fairly recently and they are very detailed and complicated. I would be interested in hearing what experiences others have had with it. For me, it seems a very cool game, but one which will take a long time to play a game!

...I don't play it, but I think I have heard of it- near future submarine and ship battles IIRC? Looked quite good, if it was what I remember....

yeah I play it, and started with it ohh... about 1988ish. It is a very detailed a good simulation- to the point where it become less game than simulation.
Then I joined the Navy, and it became the same as work, but because I really kneww the systems involved I lost intrest with the inaccuracies.
Dont get me wrong, its a great system, but the last thing I want to play on weekends is what I do all week
I use Shipwreck as my rules of choice now when doing maritime warfare as part of a campaign. Its quick, easy, realistic and fun.
hope that helps

Thanks for your opinions guys. It is a very detailed system, to the point that ranges are not given - you simply look up how fast a cruiser missile can fly, work out how long a turn is (for example 30 seconds), check what scale you are using and then calculate how far the missile has travelled! It took me a while to work this out, as I kept looking for the movement rates.
I am just reading through the rules, and it is a little daunting. What scale do you play at, Tas? I am thinking of 1:6000, but the minis wont be very satisfying to paint at that scale.

Quote (CyberShadow @ 30 2003 May,02:42) | What scale do you play at, Tas? I am thinking of 1:6000, but the minis wont be very satisfying to paint at that scale. | When I was a hard core Harpoon player, I used the vastly more popular 1/2400 scale. I had quite a lots of ships and aircraft.
Later I moved timescales and got a lot more interested in WW1 and 2, as I said moderns became the same as work
At this stage I moved into the 1/6000 range and have never looked back. I love this scale and now have all the German, Ialian and Russian Fleets and well over half the RN, USN and Japanese fleets too. Plus a smattering of Dutch, and others. However, one of the great things about that scale and period is all the dazzle cam paint schemes, which you wont be doing for moderns. In that case I can see you concerns. For me though, I can fit all the fleets into 2 styrofoam padded boxes, and do full battlegroup manoeuvres on a single table.
For aircraft I use 1/1200 scale CAP Aero range which are lovely. Yes they are out of scale, but I mount them on golf tees so they fly over the fleets anyway. They also happen to match my 1/1200 sclae coastal and light forces range which I use for small scale naval skirimshes.
The only thing that would get me back into moderns really would be if the 1/6000 range was expanded so it was more than just the Falklands War range. I would buy them
Hope that helps!

Yes, thanks. That helps a lot. Right now, I am having an email conversation with Clash of Arms, getting information about a load of their Harpoon stuff (and they are being very patient with me, I recommend their customer support!).
My concern is the scale. I want to see large vessels duking it out, but I also want to conduct manoeuvers outside weapon range. With modern stuff, that is a bit difficult! I have a couple of 1:3000 vessels, and these are only about 6cm long, so that would make most 1:6000 ships about 3cm... is that right? How do you tell which ship is which at that size?
I am not too worried about about transporting, as I will really rarely play, and I have a gaming table so my opponent has to travel. One more question, at 1:6000 scale, how far apart do the fleets have to be for effective weapon exchange (including CAP)?

Yeah, for big ships. DD and FF are a bit smaller though- say 2cm long. I can tell what they are, but I have an unfair advantage For my WW1 & 2 stuff I painted the names of the obscure ones underneath so I could always just check
>One more question, at 1:6000 scale, how far apart do the >fleets have to be for effective weapon exchange (including >CAP)?
You are right- its a long way, and CAP ranges with refuelling can be stupid. I just changed scales so I could fit it all on. In relative terms ships move next to nothing compared to aircraft and missile so it doesnt matter too much. Thats why I liked 1/6k, because when scaling down it doesnt look like you are trying to stack all the ships ontop of eachother

Well, right now I am not worrying too much about CAP, as the basic naval rules are complex enough. Let me me rephrase my question, if I use 1:3000, how big does my tabel need to be to get a good game in? Thanks.
(Mumbles... if the Atlantic is so many km across, and I use 1:6000 scale.... I need... )

I get good games in with a 6 x 4 easily! Remember than mini scale and table scale are different though!

Ummm, huh? Mini scale and table scale different. How do you mean (remember to use small words as I am not so bright! ). Are you saying that it can be played in a similar way to Gothic, where only the bridge is used for measurement, and the actual size of the minis is almost irrelevant?
Thanks.

That is exactly right. Well its the approach I adopted anyhow. At 30 kts a ship is pretty much static compared to an incoming Mach 1 missile or aircraft so it doesnt matter too much.
Of course personally driving a Destroyer around at 30kts from a standing on the bridge perpective is NOT static at all and LOTS of fun

I sampled Harpoon at a con, but am not much of a naval battles enthusiast.
I do however love a card game called Modern Naval Battles that was around in the 80s and 90s.
Anyone play it?
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
