I am new to this game and I am starting to get frustrated trying to simply put an army together.
which list do I use?
Is this the list i should use? Or should i use the one in the book?
All I want to do is put a Space marine army together and it seems there are multiple lists. I have purposely avoided any experimental lists, fan lists etc, all i want is to use the official list.
I think it would be beneficial to seperate the lists into something like this
1 - Core lists - This is the army lists for - Space Marines, orks, Imperial guard that have been published in the official rules. These Core Army lists stay exactly as they are for a period of 1 to 2 years, changes maybe be tested in that time but no army canges will occur until the next 'update time' on 1st Jan 2011. If noone plays with land raiders because they are 25 points too much then bad luck, it may be changed in the 2010 update or the 2011 update but until then the lists are set in concrete. Call the list 'Core 2009' so any idiot knows that once the year changes there will be a new list to download, there may be no changes but at least the list will be up to date and everyone will be using the same lists.
2 - Non Core lists - Everything else. If you wish to use these lists then the onus is on you to use the most updated list, players using these lists should be more experienced players who are well versed in the game and have some information about why these lists arnt 'core'.
We need to be able to put a ruleset on the table with the stanrd core lists and hand them to someone who is interested in the game and say "hey frank, here are the rules and the standard armies, there are more lists out there but they are for advanced players"
Nothing sheets me off more than trying to learn a game when 1/2 of what you read is wrong or been updated somewhere else. Case in point was 3rd ed 40k, the rulebook was 1/2 a rulebook with a 2003 update, a 2004 update, a white dwarf close combat ruling and 15 different FAQ's.
Maybe I am missing the point of this compendium due to my newness of this game but it shouldnt be this hard for a beginning player to make a simple space marine army using the correct points values without being distracted by experimental rules.
I see the word KISS around here a fair bit, maybe some arnt keeping things as simple as they should

or maybe I am more stupid than average
