Sorry if this is not the most appropriate forum but I was hoping someone with computer skills could give me a word of advice as I'm not exactly any computerwizz myself.

Basically I got one of those fancy USB storage keyrings (256mb). For some reason when I put it in my computer (Win XP) i get the message (and I'm translating from Danish here) "High Speed USB device attatched to slow hub". I can enter the device from My Computer but then everything freezes and i cannot copy from it. there's no light in the small LED on the device either.  The thing works normally on other computers (both PC and Mac).
I've tried downloading new USB drivers for my motherboard from their website which i believe updated the "USB root hub"(it was an .exe file so i assume everything installed to the right directories automatically :oo ) but i still get the same message.
I've also tried attatching it to other USB ports, removed other USB devices from my computer, checked that my BIOS was set to USB 2.0 with backwards compatibility but nothing seems to help :(

Anyone got any ideas what to do??? I don't think anything's wrong with the device itself.

Cheers and thanks in advance :)

Hi!

It would help to have more information on your motherboard and BIOS version. If you have an older motherboard you may need to flash the BIOS (this process updates the BIOS information) so that it can get the device to work. I have found that this is a common problem with newer devices.

Another thing is the "controller" programs of the motherboard for the USB root hub, this came with your motherboard CD, you may need to update those drivers. Note I'm not talking about the actual device driver but motherboard controller drivers.

Give me an idea or your setup and perhaps my brain will lite up.  :)

Your PC is up to the USB 1.0 standard but not the latest 2.0 standard. The message is annoying but will not affect performance.

//Legal disclaimer: Advice was given whilst the tech support desk was both inebriated, elated and annoyed at the same time. Any damage this advice may cause is the fault of a combination of great mates and crappy ex-mates and not the tech support desk :D. But it is correct to the best of my knowledge.//

The motherboard is the ASUS p4s8x (only 1? years old) BIOS version is 1.004 as i recall but I can't remember exactly what the bios is called- I think it's pretty standard for Asus mb's.

In the Bios settings the USB thingy is set to "2.0 with backwards compatability"  -I'd tend to agree with you Netepic that it appears not to be set to 2.0 standard but I just don't see where else to change the settings. I think i got the "slow hub" message with my scanner once but I've never heard from it since and it works fine. However I cannot acces the USB keyring from "My computer" -the computer simply freezes... reallly odd, when considering that it works fine on every other computer I've tried to attatch it to...

The MB has 6 usb ports -4 at the back and 2 in a front bay. Occupied ports by: Mouse, Keyboard, Scanner and until recently a joystick.

I downloaded a file called "usb2_sis2kxp101d" from ASUS' website which i believe updated the USB root hub. When i look in the Control panel/system/preferences/hardware
and loook under USB controllers i get an awfull lot of those.

3x sis7001 PCI to USB open host controller
1x sis 7002 USB 2.0 enhanced host controller
1x USB 2.0 root hub
3x USB root hub
1x USB assembled (word? again I'm trying to translate form a different language :;): it's probablly some sort of a pseudonym) device.

The PCI to USB thing really confuses me as I do not have a PCI card with extra USB ports on my comp???

Cheers!

Do you have XP Service Pack 1 installed?

Windows XP (no SP1) does not natively support USB 2.

I had a weird issue with XP and USB 2 when I upgraded from Home to Professional, the PC forgot it had USB 2 ports and had to be reminded.

He shoots he scores!!! :D  :;):
I think you may be right Jimbo! I haven't had the time (or just been too lazy) to install the sp1 since the last time I formatted my computer.
I'll give it a go and see what happens.

Thanks! :)

Cheers!

Hi!

Jimbo scores on this one! That is EXACTLY what your problem is. Case in point is that when I bought and installed my new mobo and was set to place the mobo drivers it specifically warned me I needed the SP1 service pack for USB 2.0 support.

Update that first, but its also important to have the latest updated bios ( an 18 month old mobo is OLD in the computer world... :D ) and interface drivers. As you've done visit the ASUS site and get all the pertinent updates.
