I have a question about how 'completed in the last year' is ruled for entries. Is it in the last calendar year, or since submission closed for the last competition?

Entry submission ended dec 17th last year, if I finished something on dec 31st (after entry closed) is it a valid entry for this year? Additionally, pictures of it partially completed were online before the end of submission, but it was not completed until after the close.

We have no issue with third party stuff being used. However, any miniatures which are both being sold and which infringe the IP of another company cannot be allowed. If you make stuff for yourself then this will be acceptable this year. As a rule, anything where someone has made cash of IP they dont own continues not to be allowed.

This does mean that it relies heavily on the integrity of the person submitting, as we are not able to check all miniatures in all pictures, but we do reserve the right to withdraw miniatures which break this rule, both before the submission deadline and after.

I'm still not sure I fully understand this, nor do I understand how it was enforced (or not) last year (I didn't enter, so none of this relates to me personally).

From a brief review I can see two entries last year that used minis that should be banned from the above description, one of which placed (i.e., not some small entry no one noticed …) but other people had entries turned down?

By being sold, does that mean 'currently' or 'ever'? If you made it yourself, but also in the past made money on it is that banned as well? (i assume so, and the number of people who this applies to would be small). What if you made it, sold in the past but don't any more? Does making money mean that profit was made?

Entirely reasonable to ban such minis and I recognise the reasons for doing so, but i think the rules need to be very clear up front and enforced equally for all entries. If i'd entered and had something rejected for having forumware in it and then seen entries using nothing but forumware place I would be have been annoyed :D

(that said, the ones I noticed are both superb pieces, in terms of the mini and the conversions/paint work, nothing against the pieces themselves, just how they are ruled on)

edit: and after another look there are 3 that have very clear forumware use and a fourth with some small bits used in conversions.

I don't think anyone would have a problem with something partially build in Dec of last year and then finished and painted this year. The intent is just to ensure you're not submitted something you posted pics of 5 years back.

The ruling last year for the forum-ware stuff was only in battleforce shots and not the entire battleforce.

Thanks for the clarifications Dave.

Battleforce rule seems a good idea, didn't realise that was the case, sorry. Though surely the feral titan on its own in the war engine category still sticks out a tad? pretty iconic forumware that most people would recognise (again, stunning mini on all counts). *edit: seems it was converted, i was overly presumptuous, apologies.

That was HerrR's. He said it was a scratch built Mars pattern made from a modified FW Lucius. I took him on his word.

Fair enough then, I shall collapse into a pile of embarrassment – sorry HerrR, it's a great piece.

No worries, easily made assumption. I met people in our wargames club saying 'oh nice mini made by such and such' and every time I had to explain and show details, sometimes there was degree of stubbornness I had to pass through. But all in all attention to anyones' joyful effort is rather pleasant:) - it took nearly a month to convert this FW Warhound, having, like most people day time job.
Being surgeon may have something to do with end result and also with keeping all fingers intact, given degree of precision cutting and filing involved:)
Hope the competition this year is fierce:]

Also what about scratchbuilds? I'm planning some defilers but they'll be a mix of gzg and EW parts....what sort of category will they end up in?

Would also be cool next year to have a category of scratchbuilt stuff. Without painting. I know some guys who are amazing with plasticard, but can not even paint a rock.

;D

Technically they can do that now, there's nothing in the rules that says the models have to be painted. :P

And every entry is included in the conversion category.

I have a question about pictures. Are montage type pictures allowed, showing different angles of a model? What about using photoshop etc?

Perhaps it may be a bit unfair/unsporting to use these applications. Not everyone has access to photoshop or similar, and it may give people who are clever with a computer an unfair advantage.

Considering how easy Picasa makes it to adjust color balance and brightness/contrast I don't think it's that big of an issue. We've allowed montage in the past as well.

It hasn't been abused in the past, but just take it easy on special effects.
