Hi there guys, new member to the board her and based in the (currently very wet UK)........
Have just returned to the fold of Epic after 14 years away...... and I must say all the work on here at TAC Com is inspirational......
Now I have been thinking about buiding some modualar terrain and although I have no photos yet (some to come) I have come across what Iconsider to a fantastic system for modualr terrain care of good old `B and Q? - check out the stiple finished ceiling tiles.
they are made of polystyrene, 10mm thick and 500mm square..... the stipple finfsh makes them ideally textured for a rock style earth....
I am working omn making a few ruins fro off cuts and attching the bits to the boards with cocktail sticks.... Anybody else seen or used these?
check them out at your local DIY superstore as they are very cheap 20 tiles for a tenner !
All the best
Guy

Welocme to the boards, free thinker. It's always good to see an Epic veteran returning to the ranks.

Welcome free. I'd always had these in mind, but have never had the time to do this yet. In my case I was thinking of using actual ceiling panels in situ - that is, ceiling panel lower surface, Epic board upper surface. And to store them I'd just use them as tiles, which I'd remove from place to play on. Needless to say, the wife was not enamoured of the idea....

Being that they are polystyrene remember that you will need to seal them before attempting to spray anything at them. Most propellants will melt polystyrene and this is not good what with the fumes as well as ending up with a mangled piece. If you wish to spray at them then coat with PVA on all sides first, I'd suggest a couple of coats to make sure that they are fully covered. If necessary then sacrifice one tile to be a test piece and use the sprays you intend on an off-cut somewhere well ventilated to see if nasty things do happen.

Yeah I found out the hard way and melted one of the tilles but this gave me another idea......
Using Acetone on a brush over blocks of polystyrene, it melts them, seals them and gives an amazing organic rock effect.
Also whilst on the topic of ideas and concepts... i was entertaining the family with a barbeque this afternoon and after covering my tiles with three coats of PVA glue (watered down slightly) I was thinking about the ashen wastes of Armageddon campaign.....lots of paint to be used... OR the ash from the charcoal barbeque ... I can say confidently that treated the same as the commercial flock for grass... this stuff makes amazing `ash flock? and I am currently waiting for the matt varnish to finish drying - to give it extra tougness aginst my clumsy wife !

You can also use the melting effect to cut a really cool river through the middle of a tile
