How do you guys base your models? I was thinking of just plain green flock but it seems a bit boring.
oh ya also do you glue your models to the base before flocking and painting?
thanks all colban

I use a few different techniques. Most of my armies are simply based with painted sand which I'll admit is a bit boring. On some of the newer stuff I'll paint the base black maybe add a few patches of sand and drybrush with Graveyard Earth. When that is completely dry I'll add a bit more PVA glue in patches and sprinkle a bit of green and brown flock. Once completely dry I give it a quick dip of thinned down pva glue mixed with a tiny drop of black paint to prevent the flock from falling off and tone down the colour just a bit.
Try experimenting a bit on some spare cardboard to see what you think looks nice and is relatively easy to do.
Cheers!

I just flock everything with a woodland scenics mix, but I intend to do some more work on titans bases. I've just stared the sand/graveyard earth combo as WMN has been describing on some larger scale figures, and it looks really good, so i might use that to start with for the titans. Building those ruin sprues that come with the epic infnatry bases into your basing technique is a great idea for titans... it really gives them a sense of scale.

Hi!
I use the simple approach. I use GW flock. PVC glue that I apply to the base and then dip the glue full base in the bag of flock.
Its simple and yields good results.

Plain flock is just far too BORING and flat for me...
I either drybrush my bases- Bleached Bone highlight over Bubonic Brown base for a desert theme, or Codex Grey over black for urban bases- OR, for snowy bases, fiddle about for hours with thick undercoat, sand and baking soda layers. I also use small clumps of modelling lichen, static grass, bits of the mini-ruins from the old bases sprues, and stone chips to add realism and extr interest.

I do not bother with flock. That is included in the painter's fees.

Quote (vanvlak @ 09 2005 Aug.,07:42) | I also can't understand why more people don't use the small bits of ruins that come with the bases - they're terrific as a rear edge to the base; better still on War machine or Titan bases. | Because they don't come with the bases anymore?

That would be a good reason!

True Primarch, I wouldn't fancy being the poor painter who had to drybrush every base for each thousand stands of IG infantry you send him!

Just like Primarch, white glue and flock, generally. Sometimes sand and gravel. And if anyone needs those ruins from the E40K base sprues ... I have a bunch of extras !

I use a straight flock unless I'm doing a "feature" piece. A mix of glue, water and paint gives a good color base and adheres the flock. For rank-and-file models it looks just fine imho.
For a feature piece (commander, titan, etc.) that stands out from the army, I will typically add a small amount of detail. Examples:
A bit of ruins under a titan's feet Vehicle wreckage surrounding a commander A scrying poool for a Farseer counsel
And, of course, typically a bit more variety in flock/base texture.

Hello to you all,
I base in two (small) steps. First pva on a few places, always including the edges of the models, and dip into gw "sand with stones" stuff. After that I use pva on the open space and aply static grass. It's easy and looks nice imho!
