Its been done over and over again many times in every country in many centuries, from disbanding the XXth Legion of Roem ("but they've been around since Ceasar Julianus!") and onward.
And look at what has beconme of your famed Guards Brigade in the last 20 years...

Yes, as of late, every Bn I have served in has been deactivated ... I'm a dinosaur ...

We Navy types are used to our ships being decommissioned every 25-30 yeras (or so). That way its special when they recommission the name with a new ship.
L4- none of my old army units exist anymore either...

I retired in '85 after 24 years in the navy.
Not one ship I served on is still around.
They weren't even sold or given to anyone.
Makes me feel "OLD".
