Basically it comes down to: when the defender is allocating for equidistant units are they choosing which units count as 'front', or are they choosing the allocation amongst units that are all 'front'? If the former then it's hard to argue that they can change their mind without the units moving, but if it's the latter then it's hard to argue they don't get the choice.

From memory hits in an assault must be allocated to units in cc first. Normal, MW, and TK are separate rounds of allocation.

Indeed, that's how i've always played it. There is discretion from the defender 'how' it gets allocated. So for instance if Orks assault you out of a landa, the grots can either be used on the initial hits if they're in base contact, or saved for stuff like macro hits later if need be, and the hits can be taken on other units also in CC. Either way of course those grots are toast ;)

Just checked the rules and they don't mention cc first. May have to dig into faq later.

Would be distance wouldn't it? (i.e. closest first) and you can't get any closer than CC. As everything in CC is also equidistant you can then also allocate as you wish. If you then run out of stands in CC it would then afterall be applied in distance from an enemy unit.

This is how i've always assumed it. Had a vassal game with a german player recently however where that was not the assumption – as it doesn't say CC first they can go anywhere in the assault (in range) defender chooses. Worth clarifying for an international event I think.

Ok here is what the shooting allocation section says

Quote:
1.9.6 Allocate Hits & Make Saving Throws
You must allocate hits inflicted on your formation against
targets that are within range and line of fire of the enemy. Hits
are allocated ‘from the front to the back’ of a formation. Note
that this is the opposite of suppression. AP hits can only be
allocated against infantry units, and AT hits may only be
allocated against armoured vehicles. Hits must be allocated to
the closest potential target first. You may not allocate a second
hit to a unit until one hit has been allocated to every potential
target, or allocate a third hit until all targets have been
allocated two hits, etc.

So front to back closest first..... yeah nice and vague :)

I don't think base contact being first can be questioned as the rules literally say closest, but the 'allocate as you wish' is less clear. Some players interpret that the defender is free to allocate as they wish (i.e. any method they choose is following the rules so long as they allocate to base contact first), but others interpret that the defender is effectively choosing which units count as being closest from a set of units (i.e. to 'tiebreak'). It's a subtle distinction that is only relevant when there are multiple rounds of allocation.

Like you I fall in the former camp, but only because it seems a more literal interpretation: i.e. the rules don't say that choosing one makes it closer, so in the absence of that they are all closest hence you move on to the next part of the rule - defender allocates. But still, the rules also do not say that the defender chooses with any freedom, so it's perfectly possible to argue that by selecting a unit the defender must be classifying it as closer.

I for one would welcome a move to in CC whoever the defender nominates as the closest unit for conventional hits remains the closest unit for any MW TK hits

Ok, slightly off topic, but as many people are traveling for this - does anyone have any preferences/things they fancy doing?
I was thinking Saturday night go for curry (Scottish curry is something special) if that suits people, let me know and I can get a nice restaurant.
The Friday (20th) any thoughts?
We could have a football match (?! I have no idea how unfit and middle aged people are - but UK gives a good example) or we could go Whisky tasting? - just an idea. -
If people have any thoughts PM me, -

Disappointingly I'm going to have to pull out :(

A friend is getting married on the Saturday of the tournament unfortunately. It's not that close a friend and I'd probably rather go to the Epic tournament but I feel obliged to go. Hope you all have an amazing time! If there's another one in future I'll come to that.

On activities. Is there anything that can be recommended to do when travelling with a 6months old for the missus while the grown up male pushes his polly pockets on the table? She is not interessted in watching and feeling embarrased for me..
