Quick (possibly dumb) question.

During an assault, when working out supporting fire, do you use the crossfire rule also if it applies?

Situation on Saturday was an IG Reg HQ surrounded by SM, massive combined assault. The SM also had Devs and preds giving supporting fire that were both directly opposite each other on either side of the IG formation. I would point out that the situation was a bit abnormal as we were playing a specifically designed scenario. It ground us to a halt, and lead to 15 min of head scratching and rule reading.

No. Crossfire is something you can claim when shooting. You're not shooting when you're supporting an assault.

Agreed that crossfire does not apply in the Assault process.
However nearby formations can have a significant effect by 'pinning' enemy units.

When units countercharge, they must move towards the nearest enemy which may be a supporting formation rather than the one actually doing the assault. This can limit the number of defending units that are able to get within 15cm of the assaulting units making the assault more deadly.
