Yes and I guess. I don't see how that affects anything though. The rules allow them to disembark at the end any move after they're picked up. It's not like it's changing their advance to a double, or double to a march if that's what you're thinking.

Ah, so you're treating it as a separate 5cm move from the vehicle? Wouldn't that mean that the infantry count as having moved twice during that move?
No. disembarking counts as part of the transport's move.

That's kind of my point. :(

The written rule is that you place the disembarking stands within 5cm, not that they 'move' 5cm from the transport.

Other uses of 'within' in the rules mean that any part of the stand can be within, so I've never seen why this one gets read differently.

agreed, it only 'counts as' a move for OW purposes, rather than neccessarily being a move...

Usually, but deployment is within 15cm of your table edge an I expect that is always taken to mean "wholly within"

I voted both because I've played it both ways but 2 much more often and never knowingly under the understanding that it should be as within as possible.

The rule/language is ambiguous. The existence of this poll shows that.

Exactly. I was thinking that this poll might show that a vast majority might play it one way or the other, but clearly that isn't the case.
There wasn't really any intention on my part to see if we could "resolve" the issue either. The faq exists because the rules were unclear, and no doubt this has been talked about quite a few times in the last fifteen or so years. :D

For what it's worth, I'll play 'completely within' if the other player expresses strong views during the five minute warm-up, but it's never going to be my default assumption.

There are a number of similarly ambiguous rules, hence the 5 min warm-up, and the most important rule of all - it's a game so try to have fun and try not to abuse your opponent (too much) ;)

I've sometimes played 'wholly within' (and started playing that way), but much prefer the 'partially within' version.

One big factor I encountered was transports- particularly WE transports with large capacities and older models (tending to be small), and models mounted on space-inefficient bases (eg. round basing). I've had experiences where 'wholly within' was impossible due to those circumstances, and don't think it's right to punish the player (especially when such aesthetics already tend to have game drawbacks).
