I always learned that the point of base coating aka undercoating was to provide a clean and consistent layer of primer for your brushed paints to cling to. This was especially true of metal 28mm models, which were heavy and would chip if they were handled or tossed about too much. However, I have never been perfectly convinced this was necessary with plastic models, let alone tiny 6mm plastics. Given the fact that GW has for a long time stopped selling specially formulated undercoat primer (and instead sells cans of regular spray paint now), is there really any need to mess with undercoat at all for Epic 40,000 models? If you use thin coats, what really is the difference between (for instance) undercoating some Dark Angels Space Marines and then painting them green vs just painting a couple thin coats of green right onto the washed and prepared plastic itself?

So, do you really need to base coat 6mm plastics?

I feel like any spray paints give you better coverage than painting by brush. For my models anytime first layer is spraued or airbrushed and I dont reall thing primering gives you any better results in 6mm. I would rather have a small amout of layers as possible especially in 6mm.
If your first layer will be sprayed then go for it I see no problems.

I would say you do not *need* to base coat, no.

However, in many situations it is so useful you'd want to anyway in terms of time and effort saved. You mentioned plastics – i'd far, far, rather paint metals without a basecoat than plastics without. Metal does chip easier, but that's what the varnish is for.

One of my friends used only a red basecoat and painted on details on his 28mm space marines standart troops and it looked cool anyway.

Have experimented a little with it on 6mm minis while looking for a colorscheme for my LatD. didnt have my airbrush around when i did these, so they are not very good.

Sometimes I use a basecoat, sometimes not. My Imperial Guard were just painted with codex grey (or equivalent) straight over bare metal for the vehicles.

Base coat metal with Enamel
Base coat resin with Enamel
Base coat plastic with Acrylic
Use brush, thin as needed
Spray with clear flat/Testor's Dullcote when entirely complete

I am in the you need base coat camp ;D primer is not there to provide a smooth finish, it is there to provide a key so the top coat sticks !

I always use halfords white primer, after using army colour painter spray it just it just chipped off !

I like using white primer as it not only provides a key for the paint but lighter colours go on easier afterwards and human faces can just have a flesh wash applied directly over the primer. ;)
