I understand that Titan Legions (1994) is a complete game in that you can play it with just what is in the box. However, I mostly hear about people expanding the game by throwing in Space Marine 2e (apparently with some minor adjustments—I'd be curious to know what those adjustments were, as well). But can you use Titan Legions alone to play broader games than just Titan vs Titan bashes? I recall there were stats for some infantry and tanks in the rulebook or codex book, but how complete were these? How many unit cards were included in just the Titan Legions box? If you wanted to play something close to SM2, could you do it with just Titan Legions, or would you need to get Warlords, Renegades etc box expansions to really flesh out the other races and armies? Were the Titan Legions rules for infantry very trimmed down, or were they identical to SM2?
Also, out of curiosity, how many people still play the original SM2 or Titan Legions? Do you play with the expansion box sets, or are they rather optional?

the Titan Legions box is a standalone expansion for SM 2nd ed. the rules etc covered all the basic units from the Ork, eldar and imperial forces (much more than was in the SM2 box), as well as some chaos and squats if i remember correctly - It had cards for new units for all the races, as well as some core company/support/special cards that were also in the SM2 box. The rules were exactly the same, and in some cases updated for errors in the original SM2 stuff that was covered later in white dwarf.
Most people here that still want to play SM2/Titan Legions have moved on to 'NetEpic' i think, as that is as close as you are going to get, whilst still being updated for newer armies etc.
I'm sure there are still people that play vanilla SM2/TL, and definitely some that buy the boxes/expansions purely for collections sake.

Hm, I recently came by a cheap copy of Titan Legions and I guess I was wondering if I can play a full SM2 style game with just that box (for the record, I also own the SM2 box, but I found the rules and army coverage pretty sparse as well). I could hunt for the four SM2 army expansion boxes (Renegades, Warlords, Hive War and Armies of the Imperium), but I'd rather not bother unless it was absolutely necessary. I've seen NetEpic and it looks fine, but I tend to be a purist and would prefer to play the original game that was good enough to inspire things like NetEpic.

Hi!
You want to play "stock" SM2, then you will need all the expansions as the army lists in the main box sets and TL are pretty bare bones.
TL has more "crunch". But it still lacks what all the expansion boxes had.

Titan Legions only comes with models for the Imperator, Knights, Mega-Gargants, and Bonebreakas, but it does come with a few army cards and rules for them for everyone other than the Tyranids (who weren't in the system yet). For example, the codex comes with rules for Tactical Space Marines and the Thunderhawk, and the cards to go with them, but not rules for Vindicators and Librarians for example. Here's a list of the unit cards and rules the game includes:
Special card – Knight Baron Special card – Imperator Titan Special card – Reaver titan Special card – Mekboy Gargant Special card – Gargant bigmob Special card – Warlock Special card – Warlock Titan Special card – Squat Colossus Special card – Squat Cyclops Company card – Knight Paladin household Company card – Warlord titan battlegroup Company card – Reaver titan battlegroup Company card – Techguard titan defence Company card – Techguard mechanised assault Company card – Stormblade company Company card – Leman russ company Company card – Imperial Guard tactical company Company card – Space Marine tactical company Company card – Squat warrior brotherhood Company card – Eldar Warhost Company card – Phantom Titan Squadron Company card – Bloodthirster Company card – Mega gargant Company card – Goff clan Support card – Warhound Titans Support card – Knight Paladins Support card – Knight Lancers Support card – Knight Errants Support card – Knight crusader Support card – Knight castellan Support card – Stormblade Support card – Leman Russ squadron Support card – Techguard mechanised heavy ptn Support card – Techguard support platoon Support card – Hydra battery Support card – Chimera detachment Support card – Manticore Battery Support card – Basilisk Battery Support card – Space Marine Thunderhawk Support card – Landraider squad Support card – Tactical squad Support card – Imperial Guard platoon Support card – Eldar Faclon detachment Support card – Eldar firestorm Support card – Eldar nightwing Support card – Eldar guardian squad Support card – Ork bonebreakers Support card – Magnum Megacannon Support card – Ork Braincrushas Support card – Squat Thunderfire battery Support card – Overlord airship Support card – Squat warrior detachment Support card – Gyrocopter squad Support card – Chaos Juggernaughts Support card – Chaos Beastman Support card – Chaos space marine detachment Support card – Banelord titan Support card – Daemon engines of Khorne
Some odd choices there... So if you had the minis, then you could play a wider came than just with what comes included in the box. However, because of that infamous rule declaring that only weapons with a -1 saving through can knock down shields, you'll find many of these basic units receiving a lot more pain than they will inflict.
I did appreciate the scenario book tho, and planned to play more games expanding on the forces in them, but never got around to it.

The very first Epic game Adeptus Titanicus was nothing but Titans vs. Titans. And the follow on supplement Codex Titanicus added a lot more nice details ...
