This won't be as exhaustive a report as I usually post. We focused on play rather than documenting everything that happened in the battle. After the action phase of each turn we took some photos to give a flavour of the mayhem. Hope you enjoy!

Turn 1:

For anyone not in the know, with Net Epic Evolution all units are obscured by a fog of war and not revealed until they are activated. This means that turn 1 is really a game of cat and mouse as players deploy units hoping not to leave them open to enemy attacks! Units are given orders as they are activated and deployed which makes for a much more fluid and evolving battle. Firing occurs during activation also, with a separate close combat phase later on in the turn.

Most of forces deploy on the extreme left and right flanks of the board. On one flank the Jet Bike Host go head to head with 2 squads of Juggers while on the other the hordes of Chaos pour through woods marching towards a plethora of Aspect Warriors.

A lone Jet Bike Squadron overcommits to try and steal an objective deep in the Chaos side of the board only for Deathdealers to deploy on advance and wipe out the entire squad with a heavy rain of firepower!

Blood Reapers open fire on the Avatar and roll four 6's! The Avatar makes three saves, but a roll of 1 ends his participation in this battle! Shame, it would have been fun to have the Bloodthirster and Avatar go toe to toe...

Khorne's Lord of Battles and the Banelord deploy before the Eldar Titans and as a result are subjected to heavy fire from the Pulsars. I play a Chaos card - Crystalline Skin - on my Banelord which sends a Pulsar shot (D6 hits!) from the Warlock Titan right back on itself! Unfortunately for me I only roll a 1 and the Warlock survives! The Banelord's shields are stripped and it takes a hit to the head which means it will have to Charge next turn... Amazingly this is the worst that happens to the Chaos War machines. The Chaos Titan is out of range for attacking Tempests and instead inflicts heavy damage on a Defender detachment, breaking it.

2 squads of Cannon of Khorne deploy on First Fire orders against the Tempests and destroy 1 of the Eldar super heavies but 2 misfires are also rolled meaning one Cannon from each squad blows apart!

In the woods, Wave Serpents drop off Howling Banshees which attack Hellhounds. Falcons drop off Striking Scorpions. Chaos Beserkers are transported in to nullify the Scorpion threat...

Close combat controversy!

Hellhounds are immune to Ethereal Psychic Attacks but the rules do not say if the Howling Banshees' psychic scream counts as an Ethereal or Physical Psychic Attack. One for Platinum?

I (as the Chaos player) allow it and the Banshees cut a predictable bloody swathe through the Hellhounds. Boosted by their Chaos Reward, the Beserkers do pretty well against the Scorpions (it is an equal fight) and break both them and the Banshees.

The Jet Bike Host pays a heavy price for engaging Juggers in close combat but do manage to take an objective deep in the Chaos side of the board...

The Eldar have taken 6 objectives which means they are well in the lead! But Chaos have inflicted heavier losses upon their enemies...

Chaos: 28 VPs
Eldar: 36 VPs

Turn 2

The Phantom Titan retreats before the rampaging Banelord but fails to find its mark, and the Warlock Titan also fails to put the Banelord down. The Banelord loses its carapace weapon but continues charging forward towards the Phantom, taking an objective in the process...

The Lord of Battle pushes forward and uses the Deathstorm to torment the Phantom. Holofields are destroyed but the Phantom survives for now!

The Cannon of Khorne dispatch another Tempest! Only one more to break the host! The Chaos Titan hits them with dual Volcano and Quake Cannon but only a single Quake Cannon penetrates the armour! Come on, a roll of 4+ will break them for 9 VPs.... 1! Nooooo!

There is massive carnage in the woods as the demon hordes continue to plough into Aspect Warriors. It's a terrific amount of slaughter that greatly satisfies the blood God! He will favour his forces next turn as they have taken the lead in the battle...

Khorne forces take several objectives, giving them 5 to 3. Things are not looking good for the Eldar!

Chaos: 48 VPs
Eldar: 42 VPs

Note: the battle would have been won by Khorne this turn had the Tempests broken...

Turn 3:

Khorne finally win initiative and the Banelord charges the Phantom Titan!

Rules query: If the Phantom Titan fires at an attacking Banelord do the shots hit within the shields or do the shields take any initial hits? I couldn't find any rule about it so the hits came off the Void Shields first and the Banelord still managed to survive! I may be remembering this from 1st edition rules...

Eldar troops tactically withdraw from the bloody assault in the woods which Khorne are winning. Trolls are close enough to engage Guardians in a one sided slaughter, but the Host remains unbroken.

Tempests break Tower of Skulls, Deathdealers and Chaos Marine Century... But now they are exposed to the Chaos Titans weapons again! Unbelievably, with 2+ rolls (Evolution grants +1 on rolls to hit for FF) the Tempests make ALL saves against Volcano and Quake Cannon. I almost weep at this in a very unKhornelike way...

Exarchs engage Angron in close combat! Angron takes out two Exarchs before being overwhelmed!

A lone Jet Bike and Falcon snatch two objectives, this could be bad...

The Banelord gets +21 CAF after bonuses for Chaos winning and the CC tail. It takes several attacks to deliver the killing blow (in Evolution all CC must fight until one side is utterly destroyed, there are no draws any more). The tail eventually slashes in an upward direction and skewers through the Phantom's head tearing it apart and butchering the crew!

Pretty sure poking the opponent in the eye with your pulsar cannon is considered very un-gentlemanly behaviour in titan fisticuffs. Shocking display.

End of Turn 3:

Chaos: 49 VPs
Eldar: 55VPs

Eldar have staged the comeback of the millennia! I could not believe that the fates conspired to prevent me getting so much as a draw!

Still, I have to say this was one of the most entertaining battles I ever fought with the balance shifting from side to side and plenty of incidents and loads of carnage. Great fun!

But I was robbed!

Happily, Evolution continues to work successfully also. We discussed again whether to revert back to traditional Net Epic play but we're definitely set on continuing this way.

Hopefully it won't be too long until we have another game!
