I generally agree with you Jimbo, but my perspective of reality is grounded a little differently than yours, I guess. But we both like to wargame, and as I said, I think it is just a matter of personal taste ...

Exactly, brother. When it comes down to a hobby it is _always_ a matter of personal taste. This took me some 10 years to realize and I have in the past been all too eager to sneer at "unrealistic" games.
Nowadays I am painting a 40k army while I have both Stargrunt II and Dirtside II in addition to Tank Charts, Flames of War, GROPOS, CAV, Warzone I & II and VOR sitting in my bookshelf. And to be honest I could play any and all of them. Just as I play and enjoy both Serious Sam and Combat Mission.

Quote (Mojarn Piett @ 03 2004 Feb.,06:53) | Just as I play and enjoy both Serious Sam and Combat Mission. ? | I just discovered Combat Mission, and then went out and got 2 and 3 as well! Great game! I prefer 'realism' in games. I want my guys to react realistically. However, and this was something that I was talking about over the weekend, there is a limit. At one end of the scale, a game is not 'realistic' and you has no grounding, at the other your troops are so realistic that you have no control!

Because of a mutual dislike of 40k, a group of us including Jyrkii and myself game up with 'Dawn Of Darkness' (click here to visit the Yahoo group).
Although project died cos no-one has been able to play test it.... I will have a go soon I promise you and will post a battle rep, even if it really doesn't work and is hopelessly broke (which I don't think it is, but I am bias) it will provide food for thought .

Well, I've actually played a few games of 40K now, just because it's so easy to get a pickup game.
I think it's a decent game, but I had to write it off mentally as just a game. It has its own tactics and strategy, but they are only vaguely related to actual real world military tactics and strategy.
Unfortunately, it's looking more and more like it is the future of my wargaming hobbies, as it's just so easy to get a game.

Hi!
Your right Neal, thats definitely the way games are and will evolve.
I think the main gripe comes from older gamers that are used to different mechanics. But as time passes and younger people get into gaming their tastes in wuick pick-up games will influence and dominate game design. Not a bad thing, but a different thing.
The only constant thing is change....

I have to agree with Neal for the most part ... IMO it's a game ... not a wargame ...
