Hey E&C I think it would look really cool if you hung the cockpit off the side. The a-symetry would look really cool and that way the pilot could see the ground when he was trying to land that 2 story beast on rough terrain.

Looks great! I like how it looks a lot like the larger drop-ship on the cover of the Imperial Guard Codex.

How about smaller VTOL engines (for landing) and big momma engines (for flight)? When I think of a fat VTOL dropship, I think Tau Orca. I think if you did just VTOL engines it would look cool to have lots of little ones.

But for this IP neutral design, there are only hooks to attach to starship hulls.

How exactly do assault boats attach to enemy vessels? I realize that FW's caestus assault rams just smash through the side, but I was under the impression that the puny human assault boats clamped onto an enemy hull and burned through, like Vader and the stormtroopers did (on a smaller scale) in the opening scene of Star Wars.

If this thing is supposed to pull double duty as both an assault craft and planetary lander, and it's supposed to be able to clamp on to a hull (a la the millennium falcon in The Empire Strikes Back), you might want to add appropriate details (mag-clamps, burners, frag launchers, etc.) somewhere on the hull. Maybe even have doors on the sides or the 'keel' of the boat. The front ramp makes sense as a sci-fi version of a WWII landing craft, but I think having additional access points would be justified.

I like the Dread Claw design as an assault boat. Just clamp fast on the hull and then metla-cut slowly through the armour plates.

I like it generally. I do agree with one of the other posters that tapering it some would be appealing to the eyes, although I don't know what that would do to production of the beast. Some sort of asymmetrical tower or pod would look awesome but it isn't necessary. I think the biggest challenge are those long sides with very few features. Small and/or large engines on the sides would certainly break them up.

Isn't asymmetry something only for Eldar?

No way, imperial super heavies are assymetrical, too.

The fact is, the bigger something is, the more assymetry it will have. The general shape needs to be symmetric because of the way the aero and landing loads will act on it, but beyond that the rule of cool should dictate things.

I don't know if the cockpit needs to hang off the side or anything, but there ought to be antenna/sensor probes, escape hatches, etc that are not symmetrically placed.

It can't be seen particularly well at the angle I've given, but the command decks on top are actually already offset to one side. I do plan to have that assymetrical element.
