Query - what are y'all doing for the water terrain. You would think with seemingly endless amount of geekiness in the world somebody would have a sea blue nylon or plastic mat that rolls out and gives you instant ocean. Anyone have any ideas?

My friend and I painted a 6'x4' chipboard dark blue and sponged various greens, turquises and and blues on it, and had fun adding a tiny crying shark (ref. Rammstein) and a tiny yellow submarine..

For actual terrain, for now, Rackham ice crystals have been icebergs, and small warhammer forest stands have been islands or the backs of giant sea turtles, to taste ..

i have a roll of textured clear plastic used in railway modelling, but its too 'roll'ish and a bit small for dystopian wars. the mat that comes in the new GW game should do the job very nicely though, and if it gets split up on ebay i may well buy one...
there's also been some work i've seen people doing where glass coat (basically a cheaper version of water effect) has been stippled onto a painted MDF sheet to give texture.

Played a couple of game of Dystopian Wars finally. I must say I really enjoy the game. The dice betray me at every turn, but they seem to do that in Epic too, so there is nothing new about that aspect.

I ended up picking the Federated States of America (FSA) Fleet. There is something about battleship paddleboats that is strangely appealing. I've lost the games I've played so far. Maybe it is a learning curve, or maybe there is something about the FSA that I am missing.

FSA Strengths
1. Firepower. This is an obvious one. The primary guns put out more damage at every range band.
2. Range. They can reach across the board fairly easily.
3. Armor. The extra DR for these ships makes a big difference.

FSA Weaknesses
3. Speed. They are slow compared to the Prussians, Antarcticans, and Brittanians. Even when I try to run sideways away from the enemy, my opponents have managed to catch me.
4. Criticals (CR). There isn't much room between the DR and CR rating. So almost every hit you get on an FSA ship fills you with a sense of dread.

I haven't used the Maneuverability function on the FSA ships once. Quite honestly I haven't figured it out. Maybe it is the the limited games or the types of boards, but I just don't see too much of a benefit to pivoting in place. Running away seems to be the most beneficial option (at least against the Prussians).

So enjoy the initial feedback and feel free to poke at it. I'm sure I'll get the swing of the fleet soon enough and make my buddies pay for my initial lashings.

my game was as prussians vs FSA, he used maneuverable to putter his dreadnaught back and forth sideways basically on the spot so he could keep broadsiding me. my understanding is that this is what maneuverable is for. it was a bloodbath and not in a good way for me

The new FSA Valley Class large flyer is wickedly cool as well. I am in love with America all over again (even the alternate universe America).
