so I'd seen the various models around this forum (mostly people talking about using them as proxies) and decided that I really like the look of Dystopian Wars (not to mention Firestorm Armada and Uncharted Seas)

Who plays? is it worth me picking some stuff up? (for £125 you get 4 fleets, a rulebook and card deck.... that's a bargain in most people's eyes surely??)

I registered on the spartan games forum, but it seems to have barely any traffic so it's hard for a newcomer like myself to get involved in the discussion

Are there many players on here? is it a fun distraction or could it be a serious game?

Any battle reports or reviews anywhere?

I've played it a few times. The rulebook is .. a little chaotic at times, which was a bit of a disappointment to me, as it's the third system with the same basic rules they've made. But once learned, the game is quite good, the mechanics work, and the armies I've tried work very different to each other. Oh, and the models are absolutely gorgeous =P

This pretty much echoes my experience. The models are great.
The main attraction for me is having air, sea, and land in one battle, continuously interacting with each other. I doubt that it will become a 'serious' game for me, but it's definitely fun.

My group are really loving it. We play every week, and have each fleet represented. The figures are superb. The rules allow for land, air, and sea, and it really works. It can be a bit slow when you have air units attacking surface ships, as there are multiple steps for AA, regular guns, air v. air etc., but after a few games you get the hang of it. The exploding D6 system is fun, and means you never know when a small ship could score a big hit on a monster enemy. I reccomend it to anyone who likes the figures.

as a counterpoint, i'd like to mention that the exploding dice system makes things more 'fun' in the way that More Random = More Unpredictable = More Fun, which is the policy that GW have been adopting lately. so if you've fled fantasy because of the random charge ranges and ridiculous magic phases, it may not be the game for you.

that said. the models are gorgeous, so you should buy them anyway.

I've fled fantasy as I'm simply bored of it..... I want something completely new, and at my gaming buddy's wedding this weekend I found out that he and some of his other friends have started playing

so now I have no excuse not to jump right in really..... I'm thinking of making a seascape board for Dystopian wars and uncharted seas, which might get used for the upcoming GW naval release too.... the idea would be to have a space side so I can flip it to play Firestorm Armada as well..... would a 4'x4' be large enough for reasonable sized games, or should the table be much bigger? (after all, lots of modern battleships can fire shells upwards of 30 miles, is it so in DW?)

DW is designed to be played on a 4x4 table, unless I'm entirely mistaken.

The outer range-band for weaponry is 24-32". 4x4 is good, but if you want to fit land and sea in the same board, 6x4 is better. Definitely invest in some island-type terrain to break up the seascape a little.

I agree with the Cap'n. 4x4 is a good start, but once you get more ships and/or tanks on the board, you will want more space.

cool, I had planned on 4x4 seascape table with another 4x4 land table with some coastline so it will be possible to join them up for some combined action!

it does look to me however that the land and sea units are a different scale.....

They are not. The land vehicles are very large.

surely that means the scales are different....? I would have thought a single tank would be many many times smaller than a battleship? in my very limited experience, naval games seem to be 1:1200 scale, and epic scale are 1:300

are there any pics of the land and sea units side by side for a comparison?

You are correct about a normal tank being much smaller. The tanks you have seen are meant to be GIANT landships, many times the size of anything plausible. The small tank tokens have two tanks on them that would themselves be fairly large, but the bigger single tank models represent truly HUGE land vehicles. The giant Britannian Landship, for example, is easily bigger than a battleship. I'll see if I can get a comparison pic for you.

Yup - same scale. The ladders and hatches on the ships and tanks are the same size. Even the "medium" tanks are positively gargantuan.
Remember, "It's steam - anything is possible" :P

that's becoming quite a popular refrain around our LGS, along with "Oh, the humanity" whenever a dirigible blows up...
