i also cant see how this will have a positive effect on anything

yes, the BFG (and warmaster) segments of the forum are pretty much deserted, but dont palm them off onto the SG forums. just reduce their frontage on the main page.

yes, the forums could be organised a bit better and made more accessable

and yes, we could talk about other games more. but how does spreading the community even thinner help us achieve that? when you spread something thinly, it doesnt actually make it any bigger, it just looks that way from above (which is not where most of us live)

you can probably blend some of the painting and modelling forums into each other, and you can probably expand the "general wargaming" threads a bit, but i dont see how that will help much. i dont think its a "if you build it they will come" scenario here. to make the community bigger, we need to be more visible. and we know that visibility brings problems and dangers.

i just dont see anything good coming out of this proposed change. certainly nothing that couldnt be achieved without the split

Bols and Warseer have Epic 'sub forums', the only time they saw traffic was when TacComs was down. The BattleTech people seem to have their place, CAV has it's forum, the 15 mm people seem to like a site etc., Modern has forums. If a goal is to get all of those groups to break away from their chosen forums, you might have some other forums with their own ideas about that plan. (or perhaps you could contact them and work with them)

People that are Chess enthusiasts probably look at Chess sites, Poker players at Poker sites, doubt that they all hang out at the Traditional Games Forum.
I don't know how most people are, but having a generalized involvement in generic 'gaming' doesn't really reflect my interests (it more reflects the wishful thinking of the my local independent game shops where they hope you'd buy a new game once or twice a week). Throughout my 40 or so years of playing games I have always focused on only one or two games at a time. Most 'wargames' and RPG's are rather involved and require a large amount of time painting minis, learning rules, developing tactics, getting games going, etc. For me it's almost like a commited relationship, kinda hard to keep more than one or two going at a time ;)

If you'd like more traffic, and want to increase Epic interest having more visibility for the forum just may work. If you look at Ebay, people don't seem to have a problem selling Epic minis, and the buyers aren't always the same and all the buyers aren't always 'on' TacComms, so something isn't connecting on that level.

This forum is a great place, very motivational, and really has encouraged me to paint, and collect, and game to a higher level. Thanks for all your work CyberShadow I just hope this turns out for the best.

You guys are killing me! ;D

OK. Many thanks for your comments and feedback. They have all been very useful and I have taken note of every post. Here is the plan....

I will install the upgraded CMS, this system will work with these boards. I will add this upgrade before taking any existing content down. No new forum will be added. The CMS and these boards will work under a single login system.

This will mean that no-one will have to have another login/registration, and that your current logins will work for the other areas of the site as well (blogs, etc).

BFG content will move across to the SG boards.

General wargaming boards will be repurposed to cover 6mm/10mm content. Some restructuing will be necessary for this.

The structure of the boards overall will be changed. The main result of this - aside from the 6mm/10mm focus will be that EA discussion will happen in the EA section (in the SciFi forum) while NetEA development will have a section of its own - all on these boards.

Now, I just need to work out HOW the hell I am actually going ot do this! ;)

This may require the boards being unavailable for times, and parts of the site generally. While I may not be able to broadcast these downtimes in advance, I will put a message up as to how long the downtime should last. Your patience is appreciated. Thanks.

Never happy eh? ::)

Your new plan looks much better to me CS! I would indeed like a cleaner looking board with a NetEA Developmental area (even tho that what it is now) marked off as such.

Edit: Cuz I'm stupid!

Links to them, and the Aeronautica Impealius (and Easy E's aquanautica?) should all be on the main website.

People could still post their BFG stuff here, same as how I post some of my 40K stuff here as well as my main project logs on Warseer.
It just wouldn't be in it's own little section.

There is always one.... and its usually you! ;D You know, you could wander over to the SG boards for excellent, and growing, BFG discussion. They will stay at the current location for the time being - www.sg.tacticalwargames.net

And, yes, highlights from the SG boards will still appear on the front page of the new site. There will also be an 'other wargames and miniatures' boards for non-6-and-10mm stuff.

I think Iain will keep both Epicomp and GothiComp galleries.... or he needs to sent me a large file at the taccompetitions gmail adress so I (we) can create the galleries at that place.
::) forgot to read pages 2 and 3...

Is Vanvlak still doing EpiComp?

Oh, Cybershadow, when will all this happen? GothiComp is about to open polls early august and all.

I have sent a PM, but the highlights are:

- picture gallery in the normal way, and normal place
- voting over on the SG boards (when I have bashed them back into shape)
- eventually galleries moved to the BFG area of the SG site

I'm a bit late to the party, but I'd thought I'd echo previous posters:

I visit this site because of the primary focus on Epic, Epic gaming and Epic painting. For suggestions, you could split the forum into Epic gaming and other gaming. GW "Wacky Workshop" boards can be merged into one and you can re-organise boards for other games and have sub-boards for Exodus wars Gaming, EW Painting, FoW gaming and painting, etc.

Also, just been reading Carl Woodrows blog on the current state of Epic. He talks abotu TacCmd and old faces disappearing so a re-structuring and tidy up is probably a good path to take.

In reference to the other parts of the sites (CMS sections) from my point of view I never used the wiki because it looked awful to use and didn't seem to have any logical structure. A few suggestions:

- Adoption of the standard Wiki software - can be used as the Epic wiki including cataloging models (including rarities and curiosities), rules, game history, magazine articles , etc (I tried to do a little of this on my site, http://zedmeister.co.uk).
- Maybe even allow the setting up of user blogs?

Thanks for your comments. Events are currently in motion for the changes here. We will have a single forum, as we do now, but it will be reorganised. There will be a discussion area for EA as well as a host of other 6mm and 10mm games. There will then be a miniatures section, and the NetEA development area.

Wiki - Honestly, I am wondering how useful this feature actually is. I can see it being useful as a site construction tool, but I am unsure about its use as a standard wiki. That said, the new CMS software does include the use of a wiki that I can activate if required.

Blogs - It is possible to create blogs using the current system (see mine in my sig).

I think that the biggest issue is that it is another login. This is mostly psychological - as you could set the same username and login as the forums - but it is a big barrier. This will go, as when these boards are integrated into the CMS, all the logins here will automatically allow everyone to access the main site at the same time (logging it at either place logs you in to both sides). Blogs are included in the new CMS system, and recent blog posts will be linked from the front page.

Also, just been reading Carl Woodrows blog on the current state of Epic.

Speaking as someone who gets a lot of PM's, Epic's never been healthier.
Nor has the UK tournament scene, which is repeatedly pulling in decent numbers, with a NetEA rules tournament earlier this year marking Epic's largest tournament in the last 5 years.

Some faces may have left Epic, but there are a lot of new ones too.

I agree. This years german Epic tournament was the biggest so far and the german Epic forum is growing too.
