These two bits of info came up on the Gothic list:

Tau - The stats for the Merchant has changed. To quote Matt K:

I spoke to Pete - try out Merchant, 6 hits for 120 points. All other stats remain unchanged. Tell anyone you want and let me hear the feedback.

Matt

Second, there will be a second edition of Gothic at the end of next year.

It will be a rule book only, and will include all the rules changes made but will not invalidate anything that has has gone on before.

Interesting.

Rules only eh...? I can't really see the point as any new players will need order dice, NC templates and stacks of blast markers.. I guess they could buy the Epic:A ones, but it still seems odd... :oo

That is disappointing - there is something about buying the boxed game that makes it far more appealling than just a dry musty rulebook,

No need to buy it if you don't want. If you can get the rules from other sources (difficult for some of us) no pronlem, but for me that already own 2 basic boxed sets geting all the rules et al in a single book is handy :) I like it.

The Tau change seems ok. There is a report in the GW forums/BFG list that is a battle against the eldar that precisely talks about them. Nice to see those tau in action. Seem an interesting ordenance heavy fleet, even more than imps. Nowadays army I would say, with loads of ordenance and guided patriot-like misiles. Good enough for me. IMO the eldar player did some weird stuff, probable out of ignorance of what the tau can and cannot do but it is an interesting report to read if you fancy that kind of stuff. Quite informative :)

Cheers,

Xavi

Standalone rulebooks seem to be the way fanatic is going for all of their games. I wish they would provide both options (stater box or standalone book) like the do with WHFB\WH40K.

I usually just buy the books, but for new gamers its alot more expensive to buy all the bits needed seperately eg: pack of D6s, blast marker gems, order dice etc + rule book and some models.

I'm surprised they are releasing Armada + 2nd edition so close (1 year apart). Armada already has all the extra fleets updated fleets in and is coming out next month. If they just updated the contents of the BFG 2002 annual and put that into armada that would have been sufficent instead of a new edition IMO (if all they are doing is small tweaks, which it sounds like).

If they do a major overhaul of the rules well I guess thats different, I wonder what they have in mind  :oo

Well, I am not sure that Gothic really needs a second edition. But, I am glad that they are releasing only a book. This seems to be aimed more at the existing players, who already have a load of what they need. Asking players to buy a new boxed set, just for the updated rules would be a pain. So, I am pleased that Fanatic are thinking about the players and not just the profits.

Releasing second edition and Annual 2004 at the same time is not so strange. Remember that the rules themselves will not change, so the Annual will be valid with the old system just as much.

I really got the impression from Matts emails that this will not be a major rewrite and simply an update, which for me is really great news.

Am I the only one to LIKE stand-alone rulebooks? With a box you're almost bound to get lots of stuff you don't need. When I bought the 2nd edition Warzone I got loads of Bauhaus militia I have no use for. If I hadn't played Imperial I would have had loads of useless Imperial regulars as well. With a book I can decide what army I want and start with that right away.

Nope, you aren't. I like standalone books as well. What happens is that I, like a lot of other people, like having the option of a deal as well. I play both imps and chaos so for me the boxed set is quite a blessing. 2 friends of mine after me bought the boxed set. They kept all the stuff inside that concerns the game while I kept the ships. A deal for both of us :)

The main problem with the stand alone boo is about dice and markers, specially markers. It is more sdifficult to get them if you cannot buy the boxed set, you know. I think Fanatic is going to solve that by placing PDF sheets on their page with blast markers and the like (in fact it is already up in the french site) so this will become less of a problem, but for games that require special stuff to be played (special orders dice, markers...) the boxed set is quite handy if you are starting the game as I said above. I already have 3 rulebooks and 3 bopxes worth of markers and dice so it is not a problem for me or anyone that already started the game, but it can be for others that start the game in the future. I have said ;)

Health and a lot of sixes,

Xavi

If the extra dice, markers etc are available as an entra set then this system is fine for me. People are more likely to buy a rule book that is cheaper than an entire boxed set which is more expensive, no matter how good a deal it is. You just dont know that it is a good until you have read the rules and decided on the force to collect, etc.

I am more likely to buy a book for a game that I am almost definately not going to play as well. I am considering the Warmaster book, although I doubt that I will ever be able to fit it into my gaming schedule! I would not even consider this if it was a boxed set.

I agree with all the points rasied about stand alone rulebooks, I just wish BOTH options were available (boxed set with counters\starter armies\rulebook and standalone rulebook).

CyberShadow, funny you should mention buying the Warmaster rulebook and not being able to fit it in your gaming schedule, thats exactly what happen to me. I bought the book nearly 2 years ago, I just haven't gotten around to collecting an Army. (The rules seem really good, I recommend the book just for interesting reading. Although be aware there is practically zero background in the Warmaster book)
