The idea of plug-in scenery is interesting. Er, maybe no plug.

The advantage to built-in scenery is a single-piece mold; smaller stand-alone pieces require a 2 piece mold, and air flow is problematic in smaller pieces.

But a larger clump should be do-able.

How about we split, then refine the concept - terrainy bases, such as pavement, cracked desert, tomb world with a few crystals, that sort of thing?

I like the idea of bases, but may I suggest a sprue approach?

Its really inspired by that top Ork army that was showcased on here and when all the bases were put together they formed a distinctive road running diagonally through them. A sprue of 10 bases that when placed side by side formed a coherent landscape would be great.

Otherwise something I have been experimenting with is variable numbers of infantry per base and variable base sizes.

Both idea come from WWII game, were quite often unit type is determined by number of models on the base, basically Hve's 3 models per base, infantry 4 models and specials (engineers normally) 5 per base.

So how they are bases and in what way i think is a great way to differentiate between armies and maybe even between formations in certain armies.

So for instance I've started basing mechanised troops at 4 to a shorter base, whilst the regular guard get to be 5 to a base.

I have a small number of 'nids that I'm all for basing in the 'ant column' 'sideways' style and though I'd love to have them 7 to a base its just too expensive.

Instead I've done a few test bases using warmaster bases and a drill of 7 strong Orks (because I have loads).

I do wonder how round based marines would look too. I think the trick there is getting the right size of circle.

So in summary I'd like alternative base sizes with alternative numbers of holes, with a scenery theme that ties together a whole bunch (10? 12? etc) of models for that all important group photo at tourneys :) Going with your plug in scenary idea making different shapes at 5 and 7 strong holes gives the texture and the option for plugs if you don't want that many men.

Hey, this is fun. A variety of bases, varying hole positions, 3 positions, 5 positions, 20mm x 40mm variants.

And 7 strong positions :)

Also I believe NH had got the 'perfect' size for cavalry bases, but I can't remember what it is off hand.

A spikey barricade thingy, modelled after a bit of WH40K scenery. This particular version has 2 cylindrical plugs on the bottom to fit into the base, but now I realize that it would only fit into a base with straight holes. Therefore, the plugs should go. There should be sufficient stability for it to stand on its own... especially if glue is used.

Hey, instant fortifications and objective-orama-rama!

I was scepitcal of this project at first, but having seen what you're coming up with, I can see lots of uses for these bits.  :D

A cracked earth base. Curiously hard to model.

I'd be happy with just a base with 5 straight holes ... :agree:  But the cracked base is cool as another option.

My plan is this: when I take Tom's EW Valkyrie to the blue stage, I'll print one of the various experiments. This way we can share the shipping cost.

Then I'll do some experimental casts, and see how well they work. If the straight hole base meets with your approval, and I get some orders, then I can order some more blues and make a mass production mold.

Edit - the experiments will be time-sliced with Semaj's Eldar molding.

Nice.  So here is another thought for you.  There are horde armies out there (Orks, Tyranids, whatever has lots of infantry).  What do you think about an odd shaped base like an oval or L-shape or some type of asymmetrical shape?

And I like your pieces.  The technology (and creativity) never ceases to amaze me. :agree:  :agree:

(Hint, for hordes 7 hole bases are great!)

Is Semaj doing Eldar of a dark persuasion?

No, the more traditional variety.

Which of these bases do you find appealing?

The big ones would be fun with Orks.
