Hi there,

I'm really testing my luck replying to a 5 year old thread, but I'm hoping someone can help me.  :)

I am researching modding an old game, Final Liberation. I have started a minor project to bring Final Liberation's units in-line with the NetEpic rules (existing only at this stage--baby steps).

Back in the day, there was a project to add a Chaos expansion to the game, but I lost track of it now.

I now can't find much useful information about modding the game. This thread is the first real lead I've found--I'm hoping someone here might know more.

Anyone have the Chaos expansion files or any material related to modding Final Liberation floating around?

Alternatively, do you still know of anyone who might? Do you have contact details for John Bailey or Jorge Gabitto, for example?

Any help gratefully accepted. Thanks in advance.  :)

Cheers!
Mark

Hoi all.

I, too, would like to see more interest in this game.  It was a good one and substituted for having real, live Epic opponents.  Although it was never all that much of a challenge, occasionally surprising, but not challenging.

However, to date I have not gotten it to work on my latest machine which runs Windows XP.  Anyone know if there is an updated version out there?

I don't think the mod was ever released, and the files were hosted by The Wargamer. I think there was recent request for the files, but from what I remember seeing about three years ago, very few units had been done (I'd say <10).

The game runs perfectly well in XP (though I've not tried in in Vista); you just need to add a particular text file to the game directory, and to set the compatability mode for the .exe to '95/98. I'll have a dig around over the next few days and see if I still have that old file for you.

The ingame videos wouldn't work in XP though; you have to play the game without them (although the intro video still worked okay - different encoding?).

Right, file attached.

Just drop it in the game file directory, and set the .exe to all the usual compatibility settings for older games (I assume you know how), and it should work.

Shout out here if it doesn't, and we'll have another go (because I got it working fine).  :D

Aye, it's a brilliant game, if only for nostalgia (Orks that shoot as well as Guard with Boltesrs).

I managed to get it to run on Windows Vista without any programming, which was a pleasant surprise having been unable to get it to run on Windows XP for years (even with adding stuff to directories, etc).

It can bug out if the computer uses a Flyer, and Marines seem to die faster than Guard to highly accurate Ork firepower, but it's great fun.

Yeah, still dust it off sometimes.  I wonder if we could get the guys doing updates to Steel Panthers to fix this one too?

If anyone has working Mods, love to give them a go BTW.

Yeah, likewise; any mods folks might have or know of, do please post them up! Personally, I never tried any for this game (as I never found any that were released).

This post encouraged me to load this onto my pc and try it out.

Well, what a fun little game this is!

I took 2 Warhounds and a Commisar unit (1000 ponts game) and was thoroughly thrashed by orks. Have not enjoyed a pc game like this in a while, so this was a pleasant change.

I just wish the screen was not so sensitive to movement as a slight move of the mouse and you are on the opposite side of the screen. A small price to pay however for such a fun little game.

Hello, I'm new here.

I was looking for Final Liberation modding info and I have found a Yahoo group about it.
It has two Chaos mods and modding tools in its files section. Also, John Bailey posts there from time to time.

Wouldn't it be simpler to mod the steel Panther engine directly instead?
I think it was more powerful than Final Liberation one, and it seems easier to modify, although I am not sure we could make titans work with it.

I think there would be problems with things like Power Fields and Void Shields.

On the other hand, Wh40k mod for SPMBT could be pretty interesting and free of problems like simplified weapons and superfragile tanks.

I'm modding FL now and it's pretty simple. Holistic Design has released modding tools for units/detachments/weapons edition, a map editor and a tool for graphics conversions, so basically I'm working with what the designers used.
Sadly, there's no tool for editing leaders, companies and campaign.

I'm working on a pre-Realm of Chaos Rogue Trader mod now.

I loved Final Liberation as it was a great bridge between the SM/TL rules set (and the sprites were modeled after the range of minis at the time) but used Epic 40,000-ish army building.  Plus, tell me it wasn't cool to hear the infantry guys scream and go squishy when you used the old "soldier sensor" to peak around a corner.

BTW, why hasn't GW released an anthology of all the old games as bonus material for DoW II

Just saying
