Here's a quick pic of the terrain pieces I was working on. These are bridge ramps intended for my cityfight system. The idea is that they can be conected by a bridge to each other or to my hills which are exactly the same height.

Thanks guys  :vo

I've got a load of these pieces I made a year or two ago that still awaits paint. I've decided to get at least a couple of them finished before semester start at Uni. To give some idea of how the modular system would look here's a WIP shot (I cit away my red rug :p I don't currently have room for a big table to display it on so I had to use the floor :D The large piece in the lower left corner is somewhat dusty but you get the general idea)

Ahoy hoy, WMN, should I post Capitol Imp progress in this thread, or make new thread?

It is time for progress, and confessional. The confessional will be public, in order for the readers to act as a jury to determine future activities.

The CI-proxy recreation process has been extremely difficult for me. WMN did not design the piece for molding and duplication, and none of the fault is his.

Below you will see a picture of various failed molding and casting attempts. There is another set of failed molds in the landfill somewhere; they were thrown away in a fit of disgust, rather than saved for documentary purposes. I estimate 64 ounces (about 1.8 kilograms) of silicon, and 800 cc of resin were used in the course of experimentation. I didn't keep track of time spent.

During that time, the peaked forward parts of the CI broke off, and are lost. This is my first transgression against WMN. The second transgression, more serious, is that the plasma barrels, along with a forward spur, on the turret broke during the molding process. I have inexpertly pinned and puttied them back into a state that may be presentable, but not as attractive as the original.

Therefore, it is up to you, the jury and WMN, the plaintiff, to determine if my penalty shall be public derision, monetary compensation, miniature purchase, or some other kind of resiny compensation.

That was the bad news. This is the good news, such as it is.

I believe this is the best effort I can offer. The casting seems, how does one say, "operable". That is, the deficiencies in the mold can be compensated for with minimal putty, cutting, and/or facades.

Below is a picture of the functional molds (woops, forgot to picture the statuary/turret mold).

1) The statuary/turret mold is working well and can reproduce those really neat swordholding skull dudes, as well as 2 mortar turrets.

2) The main turret mold is curing, and is untested, but I have confidence that it will work.

3) The body mold is pictured, alongside a cast and the original. There are occasional holes in the treads, caused by air bubbles. Experience with the mold can help that. The peaked parts are missing due to breakage (see prior post), but are excellent places to stick the statuary. The cannon undercuts did not fare well, and will need cutting or facades. The backside has a few air bubbles, but can be managed with putty.

So gentlemen, in your miniature opinion, should I proceed with production, or is the quality unacceptable? We must not fall to the "sunk cost fallacy" (see here). Don't spare the truth, I'm a big daddy and can take it.

No worries O-man. We knew this was going to be tricky to begin with :)
Repairing any damage on the original shouldn't be much of a problem either, so don't lose any sleep over it

With regards to the cast:
The air bubbles is less of a problem and is fairly easily fixed. However the side panels and holes for the side sponsons have me woried a bit  :oh: It is difficult to make out from the pics but how much reconstruction do you reckon would be  necessary here? Alternatively, any chance of some closeups?

Oo! Forgot to take pictures of the little dome that goes on the top rear, and the radar dish. Those were trivial, and results are good. I have already stockpiled several of those pieces.

It is not as bad as I had feared. Actually the rear side looks better than an original metal CI I got a long time ago :p

The sides definitely needs some cleaning with a good sharp blade, but most people could probably manage that if they're careful. One thing that does worry me quite a bit is the left side: The arch where the commissar statue stands actually seem to be protruding from the wall rather than being sunk into it. Not sure if it just the picture?

Front: Again: A bit of imagination on behalf of the person cleaning it may be needed. I would probably suggest cutting off some of the gun and replace it with a piece of plastic tubing instead for a cleaner look. The statues are supposed to be placed in the middle column between each set of arches (hence the rough surface there) so no worries there.

This isn't exactly a "open the box, clean up and paint" model, but for anyone with some basic modelling skills I still think it makes a decent basic structure to work from.

It's a trick of perspective. That area of the model reproduced faithfully.
