Hi!

Once we beat them into submission we'll demand them to make the epic models WE would like to see.

Noticed that TAS asked about Vanquisher "command" tanks.

As most of my Russes and Chimeras are from the SM-2 era, I've been toying with some ideas on how to represent the two now mandatory command vehicles, the Vanquisher and the Salamander. Frankly, I don't much like an idea of different-looking command tanks if only for the reason that in real life I fear they would be "bullet magnets" very quickly, but converting is always fun so here are my two cents.

First the Leman Russ Vanquisher, "old skool". This one is easy - one day I tried old metal Predator turrets on Russ hulls, and surprise surprise, they fit very well! A bit longer barrel and a very nice, T-55eque round turret with obviously more room for the commander to, well, command. The downside is, of course, that you need old Predator turrets, but they are quite easy to replicate by casting.

Other option would be to build them by yourself - not as difficult as you may think! Few years back I made some originals I was about to use to cast my own Predator turrets and sponsons to get a) Preds from extra plastic Rhinos and b) to get tanks more resembling the old WH40K plastic Predator. Still haven't got around to actually making the molds, but maybe one day...

But I digress. Turrets I made from sawed-off round screw heads with piece of plastic rod, or if you want strenght, brass rod or thin brass tube. This is superglued to the screwdriver slot for barrel, a Rhino bolter hatch is added to the top (in this case, Imperial hatch sprue certainly works better) and the gaps are green stuffed, although any filler will do.

Total work time about 10 minutes a piece. I think all will agree that if you need Vanquishers only for command tanks this will be very acceptable amount of time.

Additional quick-to-make embellishments fitting for a Vanquisher would be, for example, a bore evacuator (or the fat thingy on the middle of the barrel in modern MBTs if I'm wrong on the English terms) from a piece of thin plastic or metal tubing, and some sort of gun shield/recoil mechanism from green stuff. This is especially important if you have new, detailed Russes - the plain Predator-style turret will look somewhat out of place there. ?

Then the Salamander. Those build from the artillery hulls are very, very nice, but the only real idea I have is to build a taller cargo compartment ? la M577 to a bog-standard Chimera, as I don't want to have totally dissimilar transport vehicles in one Company. Green stuff is your friend, but does any of you more talkative friends have better ideas for poor ole Chimeras?

Lastly, for the Executioner I recommend the new-style plastic WH40K plasma pistol, instead of the old round "Black & Decker" one. Not sure which version you guys were referring to in earlier posts, so apologies if I'm stating a known fact here! The new version is available, thinner and more "to scale", especially after some cutting!

Thanks Teekkari, some great stuff there.  As always the problem is finding time, not inspiration, for modelling.

Cheers!

The M577 is only seen at Bn and above. ?I had an M577 in the R.O.K. as the BN LOC. ?But as a Co. Cdr, my CMD track was an M113 just like all the other tracks in the Co., for a number of reasons, one being as you stated, that CMD vehicles are priority targets ! ? And yes, you are correct in identifying the "bore evacuator" ! :;):

I have seen the plasma pistol suggestion before, but I think it is too big for the Executioner. It would make a passable plasma blastgun if one was to make a Stormblade.

IMO to make a Vanquisher the simplest method is just to put a long barrel with a muzzle brake to a standard Russ. IIRC the Vanguisher turret isn't any larger than that on a  regular Russ.

I've used the plasma gun from the old predecessor to Necromunda, "Confrontation", for an Executioner conversion.  I've used other weapons from that sprue too, to upgrade dreadnaughts also.  They are smaller than the current range of 40k small arms, and fit well into Epic scale.

I love 28mm 40k weapons. They make great main armament for 6mm sci-fi AFVs.

I especially love the old Codex Grey laser gun. It looks much better as a 6mm sci-fi weapon than it did as a 28mm small arms rifle.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I've been busy over Easter - as well as a wedding I managed to fit in two EA games!!  I've done some reports for my website, but due to limited bandwidth it might be good if 'Incoming' could grab them for the the next issue?

(Next report (7.5K battle) is being done now)_

Excellent work as always Markconz, but haven't you heard about trees? Or hills? ?:D ?I noticed in your battle reports that you seem to have so much open space and I am curious as to how you don't get bored. . .

Not that everyone has to play like me, but just about everytime I play I have some kind of water obsticle, like a river or lake, bridge, hills, combination of rock formations, and lots of trees. Then I normally group the buildings to form little towns with a odd one here and there. The last thing I want is too much open space or a straight line going 3 feet without bumping into something.

I think the more terrain you use, the better the game. Use too little and you might as well just move everyone to the center of the board and start rolling hit dice.

If you are using more terrain than this you must be giving a big advantage to close combat armies Gandalf!  :O
By E40k standards and other battle reports I have seen, this table is very cluttered! Most terrain pieces were in firefight/assault range of each other where it counted around the objectives - ie there was very little 'no man's land' around to give advantage to shooters.

E40k random terrain generators give D3 terrain pieces per 2' square (IIRC). This table had 20 pieces,  or over 3 per 2' square (some of these were quarter/half size bits, but they were all LOS blocking).

I do actually have trees and hills in some other battle reports!  :D  However, to be honest Gandalf, yes I do prefer lots of ruins and industrial buildings, bunkers etc! It looks like we are actually fighting for something other than an apple orchard!  (Though I do keep forgetting to use my river sections!). Also, I like to vary the terrain - so that some battles are purely rural, others urban like this one, others with nothing but wilderness with an outpost (though I don't have enough trees for the forest templates to do this for a battle report yet!) etc... I also have a massive amount of new hills awaiting painting and flocking, so expect a report with nothing but these at some stage too!

I wonder how cluttered other peoples battles are?  Maybe because I am from New Zealand which has a very low population density I am used to big open areas and this is reflected in my terrain?!  :D  Do other people think this battle has a small amount of terrain?!  ???
