Okay, interest has bitten me. I downloaded the CAV second edition rules and data cards tonight. Anything else I need besides miniatures?
Any comments/suggestions, etc...? Nobody around here plays that I know of. But I think PLM2212 has some interest?

CAV doesnt really require much to play. A tape measure, some D10 and some minis and you are pretty much good to go.
I would recommend that you play with CAV only forces for the first couple of games, and then add armour.
Let me know what you think as a new player.

Yeah, CS pretty much hit it on the head. I always recommend starting with a small collection of open models unless a faction really calls out to you. That way you can use the open models with any faction you choose later on. As far as complexity goes, it's easy to pick up, though indirect fire and close combat can get a bit confusing.

Well I was considering getting a classic Battletech set but thought I should give CAV a try also, heard some good things about it. PLM2212 sounded interested also, will be minimal forces anyway.

Fluff wise i'm considering a small 1500-2000 point Open/Merc force. Recommendatiosn on composition and particular units? I definitely want it CAV heavy, maybe a secondary detachment with recon elements and aerial transport/infantry. Most points would be directed towards the CAV's though.

Hmm, 1500 will get you about one section of CAVs depending on what you get. I recommend at least one Dictator 60 and at least one recon CAV with EST and ECCM Pod for the armor section.
