Hi! Here to show you some of my scrath build tyranids for BFG. I tried to made them diffrent from the tyranids in Wh40. i mean i didn't want them to be Carnifexes or tyrants in space so first of all no sharp-teeth mouths and no eyes.
Here's a first one to date, I bulid him the next day i heared the BFG was coming out. So he came kinda to small to be a cruiser and too big for an escort cause i based on an old spacefleet scale. Still not finished.

Here's another one, suppose to be a Droneship but turn out like some kind ore collector or something. Maby a transport.

Her's some of my fighters. Can you regonize the parts :D

And here's my first Hiveship.

I'm happy with the "lumbering, blind, comsuming all behemoth" mouth:D

And here's the final one in production. I'm not totally happy with him...

... it turned out kinda big but mainly becouse he still resembles a starship troopers beetlee not a tyranid

The main inspiration was his Azzhole. I imagined hundreds of ,pictured earlier, tyranid fighters flying from there like a swarm of angry bees.
Ready to protect their hive...ship.

Well that's it for now, i Hope I could post some progress sooner or later. Cheers.

Fantastic stuff, dicnar!

Could you post some photos of your actual molds, your casting technique seems almost flawless!

Nice work by the way, I'm also building a hive fleet from scratch. I recognise the first hive ship, thats a hydralisk model isnt it? Nice idea, I'd be tempted to give it lots more big pointy teeth ?:;):
The one built out of the ST tanker bug (?) is good too, if a little on the fast and bulbous (sorry, little captain beefheart reference there!). I've been using warrior bugs to build my hive ships, will post a pic and let you see.

Unfotunetly those are no my castings :) . But the moulds used were one piece, made from "gumosil WW" with apoxie resin casts. But they are far rom flawless :/ you really need a "vacuum machine" to have a really clean cast. Without it's a lottery and bubbles can ruin a lot.

thanks :) , yea that's a hydralisk - a really cool, rubber kit that i found some time ago. As for teeth it seems a cool idea.
It would reseamble a deepfish :D i got to think about it casue it will brake my first principels.
The bubble ship is still in a thinking process, i gotta change the head and rethink the whole idea cause it really looks like a space bumblebee:)

Post your fleet pics! I always like to see other people ideas. maby i will finally find a key to make some escort , cause really i have nothing to play with :)

Hey Dicnar,

Yes, give me a few days and I'll stick up pics of what I've built so far. My hive ships are made from ST warrior bugs, cruisers made from stuck together old epic nid bio vehicles, and my escorts from 40k rippers emerging from whelk shells (wierd sounding I know, I'll show you).
Yeah, i recognise the Hydralisk, as I have two which I converted for my 40k nid army, never thought about using them to make hive ships though... good idea!

Love the resin cast fortress too btw, how did you make it?

Love the massive maw!

Yes can see why not happy with SST bug, especially as it still has a 'head'.

Question - I read the book "Warrior Brood" that refers to really long tentacles on the Tyranid ships yet I don't really see them on any of the models (yours or SG's).  Are they just too hard to model or are they overlooked?

Don't take that as a criticism though.  I think they are awesome looking (and probably closer to scale than the SG models).

Really excellent work! :)  What components did you use on the whale-mouth Hive ship?  Looking forward to seeing these painted!

This is the palace that an Emperror titan wears on his back. One of the coolest pieces of miniatures ever made :)

Moscovian
Well there are Feeder tentacles as a weapon but there's nothing about  specific lenght. They attack in base to base contact so i guess they aren't super long. As you can see I have some on the first cruiser but they mostly broke and i got to sculp them again.

Those are parts of Zerg Hydralisk kit, a pretty cool model made by academy http://qtan.homestead.com/hydralisk.html
hope to paint it soon:)

Good stuff, dicnar.

I see that you, too, have problems with the crenelations on the Imperator platform.

Pressure casting is what I am told will be a cheap solution to your casting woes.  Of course if you make a pressure cast you need to make a pressure mould too.  There is a company in Allentown, PA that makes a pressure pot for about $50 US.  Of course you need a compressor to use it...

The feeder tentacles.... That's right.  I didn't get even an approximate length from the book but it seemed like it was pretty long - at least the length of the ship and probably longer.  No big deal of course.  It was more of a curiosity.

From what I saw over at Ravenstar, that sort of equipment gets big and messy. So, it's not suited to everybody.

The brother of that thought is that it is suited to somebody.

hehe :D yea. It's just impossible to make a perfect cast without vacuum. I once had a friend who studied some engeinering at university and they had a vacum machine in labolatory . The cast he made for me were truly Forge world standards or even better. not a single flow. But this kind of equpiment costs a lot and i dunno if there are any cheaper versions. From a logical point of view there should be, cause it only a machine that sucks air from a box...sounds pretty easy to made if someone knows what to do.
