Hi all,

I've been coerced into building a fantasy army by a couple of mates.  I'm thinking of returning to my roots and going for a Dwarf army.  Can anyone give me any advice on creating a Dwarf gunline army.

I was thinking, Hammers, Warriors, Longbeards, as the front line, quarrelers and thunderers behind raised up, finally a couple of cannons and a bolt thrower..

What's the norm now for Dwarves?

Also what are the key points of fantasy battle?  Charging was always really important and avoiding flank and rear combats if possible..

That's funny, I've been on the receiving end of coercion to build a Warhammer Dwarf army, too.

Charging is less important for Dwarves, you need blocks that can take the charge and hold the enemy in place and small units of chaps with two handed weapons to nip round the flanks and smack the enemy senseless.

Always remember, you CANNOT control a Dwarf army successfully without a beer in your hand.

Oh and Organ Guns are your friend against high points cost armies ;). Against the Grobbi, stick with the flame cannon.

Longbeards are even more awesome now, Ironbreakers kick some serious booty, but are expensive and i'd only field them in games of 2k or more. Stick with Warriors with HW and shield and crossbows at the beginning bulking up with warriors with 2HDW and thunderers, then go specialist.

Thanks Tom,

Not sure I've got the Dwavish constitution for the drinking but I'll endeavour non the less.  :D

Thunderers were purchased last night a few characters to lead the army..

Need to find warriors though nice big units of 20 or so I think!  Two handed weapons, miners perhaps?

I tend to find Miners are one of those specialised units that you should leave until after you have your core blocks.

Your main blocks of infantry should always be in units of 20, or in larger games 24, missile units i'd leave as small units of 10, slayers can be in smaller units as they are pretty much just speed humps (hey, it's fair, they wanna die!). Sometimes I break up my two handed weapons clansmen into smaller units of 12 but they aren't expected to receive a charge, purely to flank. Mostly however I operate under the knowledge that they WILL be charged so leave them in a big block. If you don't have any, just proxy miners for them, your opponent won't mind as long as you tell him when you deploy.

Oh and remember, true dwarves don't use cutlery... for the mid game snacks.

Cheers Tom,

Do they at least use napkins or is that what the beard is for?

I've now got some crossbows, miners and an organ cannon on order.

Need to get the core of my forces built up so two or three strong warrior and longbeard units required.. Next on my list of things to look for!

Is it worth upgrading a unit of warriors to Rangers at all?

Unit count so far (eBay and Royal Mail permitting!)

Ironbreakers 18
Thunderers 15
Crossbow Dwarfs 16
Miners 12
Organ Cannon
2 thanes
Runesmith
Dragon Slayer

Definately need the warriors sooner rather than later!

That is totally the beard (or should I say 'flavour saver's responsibility).

Now you just need your rank and file, too many elites ;). You'll have few enough Dwarves as it is (sorry GW calls them Dwarfs), a couple of regiments of 24, otherwise looking pretty sweet. I still recommend using the miners as warriors with 2 handed weapons though!

Also on the look out for a few cannons... What's the point in taking a dwarf army without cannons? ?:D

I'm thinking three units of 20-24 warriors with one upgraded to longbeards. ?Nice solid center. Small units of great weapon warriors on the side (a bit like salad but far tougher)

Will most probably be playing a hideously tooled up chaos army with a massive unit of knights.. Anyone say target practice for the gunline!

Dwarves like salad?!? Jeebs man! Elves are like salad, Dwarves are clearly over cooked steak.

(Otherwise sounds awesome, make sure you can estimate like a pro with cannons, giving one a rune of forging is a must, for the sake of reliability. You might want to try a few unrunic bolt throwers, guarenteed heavy firepower ;))

I use to be able to estimate ranges quite well but then I started on 40k and it's not really as much of a required skill.

Over cooked steak as a side dish! These dwarves must have serious constitutions...  I think it's going to be one of their strong points though having such resilient troops.

I'm still looking for painted cannons so if anyone spots some please let me know! Found three units of warriors that I'm going to bid upon.  So looking good so far..

Also found a stupidly powerful lord set up on Warseer arena of death that might be interesting to use!  Just need to find an appropriate model for him...

Well yes... Dwarven Ale is the main course, and true dwarves don't need pudding.

I hope you appreciate the lifestyle changes you are going to have to make to become one with the Dwarf army :D.
