Hi!

I've been slowly reading through AI (mostly focussing on the Kor, quelle surprise - a Gue'senshi AI list methinks?) and there have been a few parts here and there that have raised questions.

Chief of these has been the fact that the Barracudas and Tiger Sharks don't have the Rocket Booster rule addon.

Now, for the TS it's not quite such a deal - while it would make sense for them to be capable of being deployed to and from orbit, it's not that bad (since they aren't bombers in BFG anyway) - one could imagine that Courier transports are landed with plenty of TSs on board, or whatever.

But the Barracuda is specifically listed in BFG as being the Kor'vattra's primary aerospace fighter craft - which would mean that it would make sense for the Barra to be able to launch from an orbiting ship, blaze through the atmosphere alongside descending Orcas and Mantas, provide air cover on the surface and return to the carrier in orbit.

Does this mean that there is a second edition of the Barracuda that is designed for aerospace operations? Or, indeed, can the space Barra not enter atmospheres at all? Given that the IN fighters are rocket boosted, they can do so - and it seems odd that the Barracuda cannot follow suit.

I know it's not a major deal game-wise - but fluff-wise it's important that the stats fit the background, to me at least.

Any thoughts?

Gary

I think that the problem here is that, by the fluff, pretty much any craft could be given with rocket boosters. It is when you pick up on a well hidden bit of background story about Eldar Falcons being dropped from orbit that things get crazy!  :;):

Personally, I would take it away from the Thunderbolt, as it may be able to make outer atmosphere jumps, I am not sure that it is an interplanetary capable craft. I would limit rocket boosters to anything which would be able to make it from planet to moon, since space craft would often be forced to 'park' outside defensive orbits.

If it stays with the Thunderbolt, then I would make a case for a couple more additions (Nightwing, Barracuda...), but I would like it removed from all of these, personally.

It may be that the Barracuda is capable of achieving orbit but it has to slowly climb to high altitude and continues to climb slowly once it exits the atmosphere.  The same may be true for the Nightwing.  The Imperial aircraft may not have a 'mixed' aerospace engine that the Eldar and Tau do, meaning they will have to fire their rocket to climb to space and then do 'burst' of rocket fire to get to their ship.  The alien space craft may just continue on towards their space based home ships at the same speed that they fly in the atmosphere.  A barracuda has the same max speed as an Orca.

Maybe it's not equipped for re-entry, a lack of heat shielding or somesuch.

The strange thing is that in tactica aeronautica, Tiger sharks and Barracudas are mentioned as decending from orbiting Custodian carriers and are implied to have returned to the carriers as well (some during combat).  So it does seem like they should be able to use roket boosters.

I personally believe that only craft capable of combat drops should be able to preform such feats (and be allowed to deploy from orbit in game).  Though in my mind that is everyone except the imperials (unless they get a starhawk as their heavy bomber) and orks.
