Those look really nice and clean, good job on them

At an average of one hour spent per stand, they're certainly as clean as my megre skills can make them.

Thank you all for your encouragement!

No painting today... I'm catching up on my forums and posting more details about the Council of Five Nations E:A Tourney.

Life has intervened since I last posted, so I haven't made any real progress.  I've got a before shot of the tanks I'm going to paint this month, complete with the cruddy primer coat that I put on when the humidity was too high.  I'm hoping that my basecoat will hide those sins, but I may end up having to strip and re-primer the models (and therefore lose more time).  Since the group shot was taken, I primered the unprimered Demolishers in the back row (and I did a better job this time).  I also went to the hobby store, picked up some modelling supplies, and started fabricating the parts I'll need to convert up a command tank (full details on this will have to wait until later this month).

Today I tested out a variety of camo patterns and colors (see below).  My initial
thought was to use the pattern named "patches" from Armies of the
Imperium
(my wife says it reminds her of a cow) using the same
flat, dark brown that I used to paint the shirts of my infantry.  I
was worried, however, that those colors would make the models
too dark, so I tried a variety of other browns (and Raw Sienna,
which is a brownish yellow) with the "patches" pattern.  I thought I'd
also try my hand at some grey-on-grey and urban patterns inspired from the GW tank
camo pages
.

I ended up preferring my original pattern and color (in part because the paint goes on in one coat; it is an old pot from Armory), but my wife (whom -- as I've said before -- has a better eye than me) liked the urban pattern.  I was worried, however, that the grey-on-grey urban camos would actually camoflage the models (which makes them look cruddy on the gaming table).  I therefore went back and tried a couple of urban patterns that included the dark brown.  She agreed that the "not a cow" pattern is what she liked, and that brown is fine.  So I'm going with the triangle urban pattern.

Wow, your colour scheme testing process is very thorough - I just deiced, paint it and if it doesn't work out how I'd hoped - tough!  I still paint it that way!

The scheme you've chosen should look good though, so you were justified in taking the time to pick it out.  Looking forward to seeing them painted!

@firestorm40k -  I'm planning on painting up ALL my IG tanks with the new pattern (well... all the unpainted ones at least... the ones I bought painted are probably going to stay the way they are for quite some time).  I therefore wanted to be happy with the result.  Yeah, I'm being pretty anal, but I've most enjoyed battleforces with a unified paint scheme.  I thought that after my Ork and Eldar forces (which have pretty wide variations) I should give it a try and see how I liked it.  Besides, a unified paint scheme matches the IG fluff (at least, it did in the old SM/TL days).

I've gotten four more hours of painting in since my last update to this thread, as documented in my blog.  For those of you who hate clicking links, here's an image summarizing my progress so far.  I hope you enjoy it!

I got less than an hour of work in yesterday (I actually spent more time photographing and uploading my wife's way-cool sections of river.  Tonight, however, I was able to get in nearly two hours of work.  The drybrushing is complete on three of the Russes, I've re-applied the Yellow Ochre to two, and I've started on the details of the models.  I've basecoated the leather on all three, and finished the leather on the one with sandbags on the turret.

Next up, re-apply the Yellow Ochre to the third tank, complete the leather details on the remaining two, and get started on the other details.  I'm thinking of using green, and trying to go for an OD look.  We'll see how that looks.

The painting on my first three Leman Russ tanks is complete!  I still have to give them a matte coating, however.  That doesn't take very long at all, and I want to have a larger batch than "three", so I'm putting it off for now.  Also, I'm probably going to go out and buy a can of spray sealant, because the brush-on stuff tends to (a) go on too thick, and (b) eat my paint job!  If I'm going to spend 3 hours per tank, any "protective layer" I apply had better not remove any of my work!

Below is a group shot of the three tanks, and my gallery has a closeup of one with them.
