I'm wondering what size battles (point wise) most of you here play?? Or how many points you think its best to get a good sized game out of.

The reason i ask is back in the 90's when i was last playing i remember us going a bit OTT with big armies and turns ended up lasting an age, not to mention deployment zones being overloaded with so many vehicles and men they were tripping over each other.

I'm still sorting through my old bits and so far have 12,000 points of Squats and 12,000 points of combined IG/Titan Legion (although this is more if you add an Imperator).
Still got bits of Eldar & Orks to go through but i'm not sure they'll add up to much.
I remember games covered in White Dwarf back then tended to be between 4,000 and 6,000 point games.

Hi Steve, welcome to Epicomms!

At the moment I am playing 3K games with an occasional 5K thrown in. I prefer 10K + games but they take a bit more organising!!

We found the best number for a "one night" game fell between 2800 and 3500 points. Below 2500 and the game becomes odd and above 3500 it started to take more then a few hours to play a game. We started to use 2800 because that allowed someone to pick the largest titan if they wanted to.

Now that is not to say a 5000 point game can not be fun, it just tended to take longer.

Don't you mean 2700? ?2700/3 == 900 points. ?Is there an army that needs a 2800 point base?

No I ment 2800 because I  and my friends had this odd idea of having an even number. No science involved, just funny old men. Sorry for the confusion.

Yep ... 3000 + or - ... :D  But of course that is only a small fraction of all 10+ of my Epic Armies ! :;):

2700 (EA) means you have a focused army - a little over a battle company (maybe two with no frills) for marines, 3-6 companies for guard depending on style with the option of any Titan.
Game is over in 2 hours.

3000 gives you the above plus some space to get a couple more formations, I find it easier to pick forces to this number. Funnily enough takes almost 30 minutes longer to play in my experience.

5000 is the limit of the 'balance' of the army lists and in book GT scenario, they aren't tested beyond this (appart from the odd game). You need an 8x4 table and about 4 hours if you are quick.

The army lists are all tested with one scenario and a certain points range in mind.

Idea is if you play any other scenario or points value (above 5000, below 2000) you will adjust the two sides to give them as much chance as they deserve.

Currently Orks and Steel Legion are pretty much spot on balance wise. Marines are underpowered. Eldar, Feral Orks, Siegemasters are all slightly (10% has been said) overpowered. White Scars slightly better than marines but still underpowered and I think there are a couple of (overpowering) problems with the speed freeks, though been a while since I played them or saw any discussion.

We play 6000 points - takes roughly 3 and a half hours

For Epic, it's usually 0 points.....havn't yet convinced any one of the one or two local epic players to play a game yet :(

Around 2500 to 3000 points. If I had more time I'd play bigger battles. The recent Midibattle with 25.000 was a big exception.

I tend to play 3K points games but I really prefer BIG battles something like 5K+ because they have that thing called Epicness(might not be a word, but I think you know what I mean) :D

There is just something at throwing 5 Titans with your endless mass of Guardsmen against enemy lines while massive artillery fire tears enemies apart. Epic is about EPIC battles, not some strange recon missions :D

5k+ might look good when it is set up, but remember that the army lists were not created with that size game in mind and thus are not balanced in any way at that size. Play a 10k game and some armies will have unfair advantages beyond any skills of the players.

We tend to play 2000 to 3000 point games.

2000 points on a 4x4 table, we sometimes get in 2-3 games... it's more of an EPIC strike force battle than a massive war... and the games are a lot of fun!

We usually play 2700-3500.

We will run 2500 if we want to get in 2 games in a night (if playtesting, for example).  And we occasionally run bigger stuff up to ~6000.
