Yep !  Steuben and his hallmark engraved pistol was/is/will be a terror ! :o   And yes, that's why certain types "adapt" better in the military ... especially the Infantry ... :D  He is really scary in the "Paying the Piper" and "The Sharp End" ... I could never be that "efficient" or ruthless and I'm not "light on my feet", either ! :;):

Sad to say though, some are in Law Enforcement and the Military. Psycos with Guns. I see it here in the US. Look at how we say one thing and do another when it comes to Human Rights etc. ?:L

Started Heinlein's Starship Troopers (which I'm sure all of you will have read!).
Great beginning! :)

You have valid points there, but I disagree mate:

The world isnt cruel, it just doesnt give a damn...

OK Edit:

Some people in the world can make it feel cruel and cold.

How is that?  ???

I know there are people who care and who try and build up the world. But sad to say, it is easier to tear down the build.

Ok - we'll agree to agree then!

OK, bringing this thread back OT after I helped hijack it....

Have a look at this site:
http://military-sf.com/books.htm

Some very good books listed here, several I've read but failed to mention.

I liked Heinlein's Starship Troopers ! Read it while I was going thru Infantry Officer Advanced Training.  Got it in the book store right there at Fort Benning, Ga.  But I like Drake's Slammers better ... grittier, off the top of my head.  Interesting that Heinlein served as a USN Officer in WWII, while Drake was an enlisted trooper (IIRC) in an Armored Cav Rgt (the 11th) in Vietnam ...  Similar yet different points of view ...

Nice site. Two books he listed I have not read and would be interested in knowing if anyone here has...

Semper Mars by Ian Douglas (Published by Avon SF)

Enders Game by Orson Scott Card (Published by Tor SF)

Also take the time to go read some of his essays. I do not agree with him always, but many were good reads.

Yep - both of them

Semper Mars by Ian Douglas (Published by Avon SF)

The start of a trilogy of near-future "Hard" military Sci-Fi where humanity finds itself discovering alien artifacts in the solar system. ?Its OK, but not much more than a story about Marines on Mars. ?The other to set in the series (Lunar marine and Europa....something?) develop the story a lot more and while I enjoyed them, it was hardly a cerebral challenge

Ian Douglas is a pseudonym for William K Keith BTW

Enders Game by Orson Scott Card (Published by Tor SF)

Quite a thought-provoking book, all about training small children as strategists to try and finish an interstellar war between Humanity and an alien foe. ?There are some good twists to it, though I thought the idea of training 4-7 yr olds to 'zap' eachother with lightguns was more than a bit amoral and the intellects at that age were far advanced (more like young teenagers) though that was never fully explained either. ?Worth reading

OK, I am going to give this set a read. I am so mental right now because of work etc. that I need a less "challange" in my reading.

Thanks

Ender's Game is well deserving of it's 'classic' reputation in my opinion- Tas is quite correct with his 'thought provoking' comment...

Oh, and I see he reccomends 'The Forever War' by Joe Haldeman...

Another VERY interesting read, using the concept of future war and the problems of relativistic speeds and advancing technology to emphasise the futility of so many conflicts- particularly that in Vietnam, whihc I believe Halderman fought in.
Very interesting ideas about technology and society as well.
