As part of the assault rules it says that units that have a speed of zero are automatically destroyed if their are enemy unit within 15cm from the point that they become broken.
Also under the fearless rules it say that a fearless unit can elect not to withdraw, and if it elects to withdraw it is only destroyed if it ends its move within 5cm of an enemy unit rather than 15cm. This does not help, as the war engine can not withdraw.
It also says that fearless units that remain stationary do not take additional damage, but this is contradicted by engagement rule. I could only have a fearless immobile war engine survive the engagement if the enemy did not have any units within 15cm of the warengine at the time my intermingled formation became broken.
I looked at being able to move my war engine if it is on a road, but the FAQs mention that if a unit has a move of zero, but is not classified as immobile, it could move the free 5cm move for each part of the double move - but only if agreed to by yuor opponent during the 5 minute warm up. Again something that will not help, as my war engine would be classified as immobile.
I will just have to surround it with enough bodies that the enemy can not get within 15cm by the time the engagement is finished.
1.9.6 casualty removal says you need to remove casualties from front to rear, howerer this might only be relevant to shooting attacks, not close assault attacks. If it does apply, then the enemy might be forced to remove their casualties nearest to my war engine, allowing the distance to be increased to above 15cm.
Grabbing at straws there I guess. My immobile fearless war engine is more than likely to be destroyed if I lose an intermingled engagement. I should probably allocate some of the overflow casualties from losing the engagement to it rather to the non fearless units allowing them to run away.
Oh so many tactical problems.

The specialist rules in section 2 override the regular engagement rules in section 1. Fearless units do not have to withdraw, they do not take damage for losing an engagement if they do not move.
