Hey all.

Just before the plug was pulled on SG, I managed to get 1 Scorpion, 1 Void Spinner and 1 Storm Serpent.

I have bid on tanks on Ebay but they've gone for over £30 each which is too rich for my blood. I was just thinking, for a well rounded list - how essential are the eldar super heavy tanks?

How many of each do you usually use in your Eldar lists?

I don't play eldar, but you might have a look at some of the lists here to get some ideas: http://epic-uk.co.uk/ukepicachampionship/albyr.php

Void spinners are aceballs, I'd never leave the craftworld without one.... storm serpents are decent, however they are very high priority targets and don't live long.... a webway list can be effective but against an army with decent scouts to limit your movement or pinpoint spaceship attacks it will struggle... the scorpion is okay, but generally you'd be better off spending the points on more falcons....

What about cobras? :-X

Cobras tend to rank lower than the others, mainly due to it's limited range (30cm), which makes it difficult to use well. There has been a lot of debate about the stats which originally made the Cobra a titan killer, but the current stats make it more generalist.

I would tend to agree with the others;
  • The Scorpion is quite usefull, especially with the increased range
  • The Storm Serpent is more usefull than the Scorpion because of its potential in delivering a powerfull assault, which makes it a prime 'bullet magnet' as a result.
  • The Void Spinner is arguably the best because it is the easiest to use effectively. However, *it is only available to the Biel Tan* (as I have been reminded several times recently :D )

The other thing to note is that there is a trade-off in using more EoV together. This is also the subject of current discussion because it reduces the number of activations and increases the value of the formation, risking it becoming the BTS.

30CM?!

Man the last time I used them in the Epic 40k rules I remember it blowing up two gargants from the other side of the board!

Yeah that seems kind of silly to me.

I will answer in terms of the numbers (at 3k points):
If you field void spinners it will be one or two. I'd consider one a minimum to have in your collection, two is enough.
If you field scorpions it's likely to be one.
If you field storm serpents it's likely to be two. You can make a list with one work but it's less efficient in terms of the ratio of transported formations to webway portals (hint: you need to plan to lose at least 1 storm serpent at some point on turn 1 or 2).
If you field cobras it is likely to be one or two, but is a rarer occurrence so really it's just as likely you'd be building a list around them (which might mean you'd want upto 3). I wouldn't lose sleep about not having any.

I've had my eldar for 10 years and whilst I have some on my painting table, this is what I have painted:
2 void spinner
2 storm serpent
1 scorpion
0 cobra

I had three of the old style of both cobras and scorpions painted up, but the above is what I painted up of their newer-style replacements, which should tell you how I valued them. I haven't really felt constrained.

Well I've never taken a Void Spinner to a tournament as I think they are dirty, dirty things and anyone who does just can't play Eldar (JOKE) ;)

With taking that into account my favourite EoV is the Storm Serpent and I often play with multiple SS. However the increase in spacecraft with pin-point attacks has made their inclusion a lot more tricky.

Second for me is the Cobra - Super death on a stick. Well in theory as they tend to miss or die before delivering the master stroke.

Last place out of the three that I play with is the Scorpion. Not that I don't take them it is just that they have 2 long range shots and well, double + cover makes me miss too many times to get really excited.

Following stats and points from the Compendium, I would rate them like:

Void Spinner: high quality artillery ready to support assaulting formations on almost every corner.

Scorpion: not that good.

Cobra: awful range.

I still have to give more tries to the SS, but probably quite good due to FF4+ and Portal, so VS > SS > Sc > Co.

Thanks for the advice!

Alas I have only a single storm serpent so it might be sitting on the bench a bit, ha ha.

I just went back over the list and yeah, Cobras look difficult to use but pack a big punch, which seems like an exciting challenge to me!

Cobras probably work best in the ulthwe list with it's SR5 you attempt to out-activate your opponent (easier said than done) then can double or march the cobra into prime position, next turn you win the rolloff and sustain fire for maximum damage :)

It is worth noting that the netEA and EpicUK cobra stats have become quite divergent from each other recently...

Also, though this may have changed with the most recent stats, Cobras work(ed) best in pairs...
