Okay I am looking to have some more people look over a list I have been putting together and see if I have overlooked anything.

Two things to know beforehand, our local meta has a bit of air but generally not overloaded with it. I am putting self imposed restriction of Marines only without allied detachments (so no warhounds or thunderbolts ... at the moment they will come into the pool later)

Overall I see the Astartes list has having a LOT of flexiblity and I want to capitalise on that flexibility and be able to offer a varied amount of in game decisions based on who or whatever I am facing

Tactical Formation 475pts (BTS)
Supreme Commander
1x Las Razorback
1x Hunter
3x Rhinos

Tactical Formation 325pts
Librarian/Chaplain or Dreadnought (just not sure about best option for this formation, possibly Chaplain)
Drop Pod

Terminator Formation 400pts
Chaplain

Scout Formation 175pts
1x Las Razorback
2x Rhino

Predator Formation 325pts
4x Annihilators
1x Hunter

Landspeeder Formation 200pts

Landspeeder Formation 200pts

Whirlwind Formation 300pts

Thunderhawk Gunship 200pts

Thunderhawk Gunship 200pts

Strike Cruiser 200pts

I feel it has a good amount of activations. Objective grabbing is well covered in addition to taking and holding locations. It is mobile and can apply force in specific locations. Orbital bombardment and Whirlwinds punish clumping up and could deter castling. I can plantefall against lots of AA. 2 points of AA myself with the Hunter able to suppliment the Annihilators well. Drop Pod Tactical formation can redeploy via Thunderhawk if needed later in the game.

As for areas that I am not sure about.
1. which 50pt upgrade to the Tactical in the drop pod
2. Landspeeders or Landspeeder Tornados
3. Drop the Predators and the Las Razorback from the Scouts for a second Terminator formation? or indeed drop the drop pod tacticals and las Razorback from the scouts for a second Terminator formation. I have the second Thunderhawk available.

I like bikes but have not been able to find models I like to use for them yet. I'm not a fan of Assault Marines. I also have 4 Vindicators, 4 Land Raiders plus a unit of Devastators available and a couple of Dreadnaughts.

Thanks for reading and for feedback

Terminators in thunderhawk are awesome! I would take a 2nd formation!

I regularly play SMs without allies and do fine. I'm a big fan of adding a single Land Raider to each of my infantry formations to make them tougher.

I would go with a Chaplain; it's definitely the best of the choices.

Your list has a bit of everything which is fine. I wouldn't include a spacecraft to only drop 1 formation though, it's not a cost effective use of 200 points. I'd either not bother with a Strike Cruiser or use one to drop 3-5 formations on the enemy.

I think a strike cruiser is fine. It's worth a reasonable amount for the attack alone and the effect it has on the enemy's deployment, and certainly for drop podding even 1 formation considering a thawk is 200 points.

Agree with Kyrt, Strike Cruiser is brilliant for disrupting the opponents deployment and for thinning out hordes

look at the most successful marine lists on the EUK site.... most include a strike cruiser and podding devs, I've never known Steve or Dave to use more than 1 podding formation....

The strike cruiser was primarily there to disrupt deployment and prevent castling. Its also there just for the one formation drop podding (been flip flopping between devs and tacticals) plus the option of planetfalling the thunderhawks if faced with an overwhelming amount of AA. The whirlwinds maintain that pressure a little being able to prep from a distance and potentially make certain lanes of movement less desirable

If going to podding devs instead it takes the basic cost of the formation to 250pts from the 325 of the tacticals so nets me 75 pts. I can put that into a Landraider upgrade on the Supreme Commander/BTS formation giving it more durability or put some upgrades in the devs (possibly Librarian and Dread if I drop the Razorback from the scouts or 2 dreads) It keeps the formation in size that can be picked up and redeployed by thunderhawk later in the game and I'm not sure what would be best as a base formation size of 4 stands freaks me out a little.

Thanks all for the feedback so far

Supreme Commander in the BTS formation not fantastic - BTS will be targeted and if you lose it u lose ur SC reroll...just my experience with marines...

Yeah I didnt like that at all either but I had no other place where to put him, maybe the drop pod formation?

preferably u want your SC on the table from the start of the game...with ur list the current option you have taken may be the best, although if you drop the drop pod unit then u can set up another ground unit to hide your SC unit...

Marines are one of the few armies that can get away with taking the Supreme Commander in the BTS.
It's quite hard to wipe out a large Marine formation.
That said it's not ideal, just doable.

Or just don't bother taking a Supreme Commander. Marines have initiative 1+ and I very rarely take one in my SM armies, preferring to spend the points on more killy things.

I use SM a lot and rarely use Thunderbolts or Titans. I personally would drop all the commanders/characters, change one of the Tacs to Dev + Dreads (great for holding objectives on overwatch) and depending on the opponent drop the strike cruiser and one of the Speeder formations and replace it with a second termies or (if the opponent is infantry heavy) some vindicators with dreads if you have the points. I think Vindicators are under appreciated.

Maybe due to the opponents I play (same 2 or 3 all the time) but so far I have seen little value in characters and landspeeders in an SM army due to how Versatile and resilient they are.

To represent the flexibility you require, E-UK have an additional special rule which specifies, once the opponent's army is known, that the SM player can decide on the transport each formation will use from those available - eg they can swap Rhinos for Pods if there is a space cruiser present.

Huh...didn't realize that was actually official epic-UK thing. I just thought it was defacto standard.
The more you know... :)
